And now we come to Disney’s newest princess: Moana. This one is still really new, so if you haven’t seen her movie yet, spoiler alert.
Moana is the daughter of the chief of a village on an island in the Pacific. Which, to me, doesn’t scream princess. But, if Pocahontas counts, then so does Moana. Moana, herself, declares that she is not a princess. But Maui, voiced by Dwayne Johnson, states that “if you wear a dress and you have an animal sidekick, you’re a princess.”
I feel like Moana will eventually be added to Disney’s official princess lineup. But I thought that about the Frozen girls. They haven’t been included yet and their movie came out three years ago.
Anyway, the story goes that Moana, from early childhood, has a strong desire to sail and explore the ocean. Her father, the chief, wants nothing more than for his daughter to keep her feet firmly planted on dry land and to inherit his title. But her destiny lies with the sea and she sets out to return the heart of Te Fiti, an island goddess, and restore her to life. Along the way, she meets Maui, a smart-mouthed, arrogant demigod, who helps her with her mission.
Really, though, if you haven’t seen it, you should. It’s a fun and touching story with catchy songs. Classic Disney.
Should You Date Her?
With Moana, we return to the younger princess. She’s only 16. So if you give her a couple years to age up a bit, I’d say yes.
But good luck getting her to stay in one place for an extended period of time. She’s an explorer. It’s in her blood.
And, like many of our 21st century Disney princesses, Moana is brave, independent, and ready to take on whatever the world throws at her. She faces down living coconut pirates and a giant crab and a lava monster.
If I say anything else, I’ll be giving away too much of the movie. Go see it. Trust me. It’s a good one.
