Question of the Week #319

If what you owned had no bearing on what people thought of you, would you spend your money differently?

Absolutely not. Because I’m 100% certain that nothing I own has anything to do with what anyone thinks of me.

It’s not as if I have lots of money and I try to show off by purchasing flashy things to show off for friends and family. Anything I buy is simply for my own personal enjoyment. If I get a PlayStation 5 it will be because I want one for entertainment purposes… Not so I can invite my friends over to say, “Look what I got!”

Not that I ever have friends over to my apartment. None of my friends live nearby. The best I could do would be to invite strangers into my apartment. But I don’t care what strangers think of me. They’d probably judge me for not vacuuming enough.

What about you? Do the opinions of others hold sway over how you spend your money? Let me know what you think down in the comments!

  1. Not directly. I mean, I have an iPhone because it’s the best with respect to accessibility, not because it’s “in” (or I wouldn’t have an iPhone SE). I don’t spend money on things that I know or think will impress others at all. That being said, I do sometimes find my creative process being influence by what others think of me and, by extension, find what I buy for my crafting influenced by these judgments too.

  2. I’m also going to say no? I’m pretty ok with my spending goals and habits and don’t really care too much what others think? I would love to update my gel nail polish collection but the price tag of about $400 is one thing that is holding me back, both in terms of actually having that cash free to spend in such a frivolous way, but also the shock of people learning it haha. If I had that disposable cash, I would 100% do it instantly! And enjoy the shock from others lol

  3. I’m same with you. No difference. I’m known in my community as “the poor foreigner” because I ride an electric scooter to work vs. drive a car. Meanwhile I whiz past all those idiots in cars when they are stuck in traffic yelling (in my head) “suck my poor foreigner dust”. Ok, maybe it’s not that dramatic, but I think you get the picture.
