Something I used to love doing on my old blog and even on this one in the early years was to make an attempt at writing some fiction. Back in the day, I followed a blog called Sunday Scribblings that would post a one word prompt encouraging other bloggers to write a post based on that word. There were no rules, the post just had to be inspired by that word. Most of the participants, I discovered, used the prompt to inspire poetry of some kind. I took the one word prompt and tried to build a story around it. Some weeks, I’m sure, were more successful than others.
Sunday Scribblings closed up shop. So did Sunday Scribblings II, which came along for a while. I’m sure I could do a search and find someone out there who puts prompts out there that could inspire me to write some more fiction. But how does one even search the internet for things?
But I’d love to get back into some fiction writing. It’s a creative part of my brain that I just don’t stretch enough these days. I also want to be challenged. And that’s where y’all come in. I want you to challenge me by providing certain criteria that I’ll have to follow in order to put together a coherent short story.
Here’s what I need from you:
- Character name
- Setting
- An object
- An emotion
You give me those four things and I’ll do my best to come up with something mildly entertaining.
I’ve done a post like this before, but it’s been a long time. And I did it once on my old blog and had a blast with it. So leave your criteria in the comments and I’ll get busy writing some stories each Friday until we run out of commenters.
Ready? Go!
