Kids, it has been a crazy week. It’s been a long week. The blessing of a Friday is not lost on me this week. I even had the day off Tuesday for Election Day and it still feels like someone, somehow, managed to cram two weeks worth of crap into this one week.
On Monday, I began working at a new school. Well, it’s new to me, anyway. I’m still in the same school district. Still driving an insane number of miles to get to the school. But the school is different than anything else I’ve experienced.
For one thing, it’s a lot bigger. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say it’s about three times the size of my previous placement. For another, the schedule is off. I’ve grown accustomed to the school day running from 7:30 a.m. (I know! Crazy!) to 2:30 p.m. (which is nice when it means you’re back home before Ellen comes on). Now, school doesn’t actually begin until after 8:00 a.m. and I’m there until after the buses and car riders clear out, closer to 3:30. At best, I’m home at 4:30.
That doesn’t sound like much. But, trust me, there’s a big difference between getting home at 3:30 compared to an hour later.
This place is kind of a maze. Not amazing… a maze. It’s easy to get lost. And the walk between one of my clients’ classrooms and my office is about 2.5 miles. On the plus side, all that walking combined with the sauna-like temperatures in each classroom means I’ve lost about five pounds this week.
I’m working with kids I’d never met before Monday. I’m working with teachers I’d never met before Monday. And, bonus, my caseload is likely to get shuffled around again because not all of the kids like me. I’m not sure what their deal is. I’m very likable.
