Welcome to the 2021 A to Z Challenge! My theme this year is DC Comics. And that’s mostly because of my undying affection for the comic book characters and stories that I grew up reading in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. So stay tuned all month to (maybe) learn a little something about 26 corners of the DC Multiverse.
Vandal Savage is a character that I really don’t know a whole lot about. But I find him fascinating nonetheless.
Vandal is what one would consider an immortal. But that’s not how he started out. Vandal Savage was a caveman. Somewhere in DC’s prehistoric timeline, the caveman that would become Vandal Savage came upon a crashed meteor. Radiation from that meteor granted him immortality. I’m pretty sure it also enhanced his other senses and gave him an accelerated healing factor, too. I could be wrong about that, though.
Obviously, with a life that spans more than 50,000 years comes a certain amount of knowledge that he would pick up over the ages. This gives him the ability to master hand-to-hand combat and strategy.
Though he most often goes by the name Vandal Savage, throughout human history he has taken on other identities as his various empires have risen and fallen. In fact, he may have been the historical figure we know as Genghis Khan.
Probably not, though.
Savage appeared on the small screen in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow as the first season’s main adversary. I didn’t much care for his portrayal here or his close ties to the Hawkman and Hawkgirl mythos. He is also a major player pulling strings behind the scenes on the animated Young Justice series.
That’s about all I have for Vandal Savage. Anyone else have anything to add? Let me know down in the comments!
