Because today is World Penguin Day, our Sunday Scribblings prompt for this week is Penguin. If you decide to write a post based on this week’s prompt, be sure to go back here and share your link so everyone can see how you interpreted things! Here’s what I did with it…

How fitting that in this A to Z Challenge month where I focus on a different character from DC Comics lore each day that World Penguin Day would hit and there just happens to be a DC villain named Penguin?

It’s like you get a bonus A to Z Challenge post. Isn’t that great? Aren’t you just going, “Ooh… Aah…?”

So what is there to say about Penguin?

Penguin is a fairly popular Batman villain. My first introduction to the character came in the form of Burgess Meredith, who played the Penguin on the old 1960s Batman television show. He always had a monocle and top hat and clinched a cigarette holder between his teeth as he randomly made a “waugh” sound. It was amazing.

In the comics, Penguin is typically depicted as more of an organized crime boss than gimmicky super villain. He even has a legitimate night club called the Iceberg Lounge. But behind the scenes he’s pulling criminal strings and running some sort of evil schemes. He’s usually on Batman’s radar for something.

Penguin was also famously portrayed by Danny DeVito in Batman Returns. This is where I learned he had a real name: Oswald Cobblepot. I’ve always thought that DeVito did a fantastic job playing the Tim Burton version of this villain. It was a nice mix of the crime lord that we see in the comics and the cartoonish gimmick I was used to from the old TV show. It helped that he rode around in a giant mechanical rubber duck and used various umbrellas to distract his enemies. Oh, and he had cybernetically controlled penguins that he tried to use to attack Gotham City when his other plans fell through.

Thanks to everyone who participated this week and shared your links! Please visit their blogs, give them a follow, and take a look at how they interpreted the prompt.

  1. Oooooo I KNOW THIS ONE!
    At least Danny Divto

So we had “little giants” and “batman returns” recorded off of tv on a vhs and I was always scared of batman returns but it was first on the tape! And my brother loved it! So if I wanted to watch “little giants” I had to fast forward and keep checking the tape to see if I had gone far enough to get to it! Ugh the stress for little T 😂
