Question of the Week #220

If you had to be obsessed with money, sex, sports, religion, or food, which one would you choose?

Do I have to choose? I’d rather not be obsessed with anything. Obsession can lead to some pretty dark places. Looking at that list, I only see negatives at the end of those obsessive roads.

Obsession with money would lead to heartlessness… soullessness. Obsession with sex would lead to a life that is ultimately unfulfilled. Obsession with sports would lead to a need to take bigger risks, leading to heavy losses. Obsession with religion would lead to extremism. Obsession with food would lead to obesity.

Maybe that’s the pessimist speaking. I just don’t like the word obsession.

Could you choose? What do you want to be obsessed with?

  1. Food.
    Definitely food.

I feel like a sex addiction would be fun at the start, but when the enjoyment factor wore off, well… who wants to have sex if you’re not enjoying it?

As for Religion, there’s a whole world of Religious Fundamentalists I’ve been researching the past couple of months and what I’ve learned from them is that Religious obsession is not a positive thing.

Sports… meh. I feel like the cancelling of all sports seasons because of Corona has really taught me that I’m neither here nor there about the fact that they’re not even on.

And money… aren’t we all obsessed with money already? If we have it, we want to keep it. If we don’t have it, we want to make it. If we have a little bit, we want to make it stretch as far as possible. Seems like there’s a little bit of obsession in everyone, from my perspective.

  2. Obsession doesn’t necessarily mean extremism or over indulgence. You could be obsessed with food: it’s quality/how it works together/trying to find new flavours etc without over indulgence. Religious obsession could lead to vast knowledge of all different religions, sex could be different pleasure centres or new experiences, etc etc
