Because today is Lucky Penny Day, our Sunday Scribblings prompt for this week is Penny. If you decide to write a post based on this week’s prompt, be sure to go back here and share your link so everyone can see how you interpreted things! Here’s what I did with it…
The penny laid on the sidewalk throughout most of the night. It came to be this way, heads side up, when someone accidentally pulled it out of their jeans pocket and carelessly dropped it as they walked away. As the penny hit the concrete, it made a light pinging sound, but no one paid attention.
In that moment, it was nearing closing time for many of the local establishments, so there were plenty of people who walked by. Some even stepped directly on top of the penny. But they paid no attention to the spare bit of copper lying on the ground.
Eventually, the people went away. The penny stayed on the cold sidewalk throughout the pre-dawn hours of morning. As the sun rose, signaling a brand new day, people began to stir once more. First one, then another, then a handful of others, walked past the forgotten penny. Occasionally someone would glance down and spot the one-cent piece, but they would simply sneer and move on. What’s a penny worth, anyway?
But sometime around mid-morning, an odd thing happened. An old man strained to bend over, looking intently at the penny that had been lying on the sidewalk since the middle of the night. His aged fingers pinched together to pick up the penny from the ground. He squinted his eyes, hoping to give himself clearer vision as he examined the coin.
“Nineteen…” he began, seemingly unable to quite make out the rest of the year stamped on the penny. “Fifty… seven?”
A smile formed on the old man’s unshaven face as he flipped the coin, caught it, then dropped it into his pocket. “Must be my lucky day.”
Thanks to everyone who participated this week and shared your links! Please visit their blogs, give them a follow, and take a look at how they interpreted the prompt.
Be sure to come back on Wednesday for the next Sunday Scribblings prompt! Encourage other bloggers to challenge themselves with the prompt! Remember that there are no rules for what you write, other than responding to the prompt! You can write fiction, non-fiction, poetry, prose, biography, instruction… it’s all up to you!
