A to Z Challenge – XS

Welcome to the 2021 A to Z Challenge! My theme this year is DC Comics. And that’s mostly because of my undying affection for the comic book characters and stories that I grew up reading in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. So stay tuned all month to (maybe) learn a little something about 26 corners of the DC Multiverse.

Before I begin, I’m going to admit that I know extremely little about the character known as XS in the DC Universe. So this is likely to be a short post.

XS is a speedster whose powers run in the family. Get it? Run in the family? Okay…

I did have to look up her alter ego, Jenni Ognats, even though I’m fully aware that she’s the granddaughter of Barry Allen, AKA the Flash. Her first cousin is Bart Allen, AKA Impulse. And… uh… that’s really all I’ve got.

Judging by her outfit and the prominent L on her belt buckle, she’s a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, a super team hailing from the 30th and/or 31st century, depending on the story. I’m not exactly sure how a superhero from the 20th/21st century has a granddaughter 1,000 years from now. Though I’m sure time travel plays a part at some point.

XS has appeared in live action (sort of) on The Flash TV series currently running on the CW. I say sort of because this version of XS, while from the future, is not Jenni Ognats. She’s Nora West-Allen, daughter of Barry Allen and Iris West-Allen. She was played by Jessica Parker Kennedy and, in my opinion, was equal parts interesting and annoying… it really depended on how the writers wrote her character in any given episode.

I’m sorry I really don’t have anything more than that. She’s the only character I could think of from the DC Universe whose name begins with an X.

Have you heard of XS before? Are you disappointed with the lack of info in this post? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

  2. I only know her / the version from the tv show, as you mentioned. And yup, that character was equal parts fantastic and annoying, depending on the episode and maybe the timeline or perhaps the multiverse they were in. (You have to be REALLY sober and awake to watch that show. It is not casual viewing.)

I love letter X posts! Always such variety.
It’s hard to believe the alphabet part of the blogging challenge is over for 2021. Down to the after survey, reflections, and the “road trip” sign-up.
Plus, I’m taking part in the Bout of Books read-a-thon in May. So much excitement!
