YouTube Spotlight: Hot Ones

I watch a lot of YouTube. Most of the time, if I’m at home during the day and working from home, I typically have YouTube going on my TV. I’ve got a number of YouTube channels that I’ve subscribed to and I love to just let the videos play on, automatically moving on to whatever recommended video comes up next. So I thought I’d start a new occasional kind of post that throws the spotlight on some of my favorite channels or shows that can be found on the YouTube. This week, we take a look at First We Feast‘s Hot Ones.

First We Feast is the channel, Hot Ones is the show. As the host, Sean Evans, says at the beginning of each new episode: “It’s the show with hot wings and even hotter guests.”

The premise for this internet talk show sees its celebrity guests face down ten hot wings that get progressively hotter as the interview progresses. The spiciness of the wings is rated by the Scoville scale, beginning around one or two thousand and winding up in the millions by the end of the show.

It’s an interesting hook, because you think you’re just tuning in to see your favorite celebrities sweat it out. But these interviews are some of the best you’ll see. That’s right, Barbara Walters has got nothing on Sean Evans. This guy knows his stuff. Between him and the behind the scenes staff on Hot Ones, they craft an incredible interview with seriously deep questions to ask their guests.

And I’m not the only one who notices and is impressed by the depth of the questions asked. So many of the celebrity guests are taken aback and even compliment Sean about how impressed they are that he would ask a question that touches on a particular topic. Because Sean doesn’t just cover the things that every late night talk show host is going to cover. I mean, sure, if Scarlett Johansson is on the show, Avengers is gonna come up. But this guy goes beyond her career and asks about other things that she’s involved in and finds out her impressions on people and places that you normally don’t hear about in press junkets.

Personally, I’m not a fan of spicy foods. So, sure, I can’t help but laugh at the celebs who can’t handle the hotter sauces. Even though I know, with absolute certainty, that I would be tapping out by the time we hit wing number two. Yeah, I laugh… but I’m also so impressed when the guests go all the way.

I’ve watched a lot of the episodes… not all… and I’ve only seen a couple of people tap out before reaching the end. Apparently DJ Khaled dropped out after the third wing. I think that’s the earliest anyone ever quit. The vast majority of the guests do make it all the way, and it’s impressive every time.

Yeah, they’re sweating… they’re cussing… they’re drinking milk and eating ice cream… but they get through all ten wings.

If you want to see a good talk show with some interesting celebrities, head to YouTube and First We Feast and check out Hot Ones. Below, you can catch a recent episode with Jessica Alba. For a while, I didn’t think she was going to make it. But she’s a trooper…

  1. It really is a great show! I need to get back into it. The questions are awesome and it’s obvious Sean and his team do a lot of research beforehand. They make every other talk show look unprepared.
