Breakfast Every Day

I feel like I’ve mentioned before that I don’t like to listen to the radio. Mostly, I think it’s because I’m unhappy with today’s style of music that seems to be popular with the kids. If it’s not the stuff I grew up on in the 80s and 90s, I’m likely to turn it off.

But I find that listening to the radio is something of a necessity in the morning as I make my long commute to work. Listening to the local radio station means I’m more likely to hear if there’s a traffic issue on the interstate and then find an alternate route.

Honestly, I still get fed up with that local station that brags about playing all the hits of the 80s, 90s, and today. Because when they play the songs of “today,” it’s very likely I’m going to hear the same five songs by Adele, Maroon 5, or Shawn Mendes. Ugh.

I’m tempted to go into why these particular artists make me turn off the radio. So I will.

I like Adele. I think she’s amazingly talented. But she’s overplayed. Same deal with Maroon 5. Not as talented, in my opinion, as Adele, but they’re overplayed. To the point where I absolutely cannot stand Adam Levine’s voice. Nails on a chalkboard. And all of Shawn Mendes’ songs sound the same to me. Verse, chorus, verse, bridge where he repeats the same line two or three hundred times, chorus again… and it’s just progressively whiny. Ugh.

The point of all that is to say that I usually listen to the radio in the morning on the way to work. Recently, I’ve been hearing a commercial for a local plumbing company. I assume they’re looking for new employees, because the ad that’s been airing repeatedly lets us all know that they provide a hot breakfast for their employees every day. Then they proceed to list off all of the delicious meals that have been provided for the last two months.

It’s annoying.

Why is it annoying? I mean, it’s nice that they care this much about their employees that they would be willing to feed them what is widely considered to be the most important meal of the day. But it’s annoying to be sitting in a car on my way to my own job where a hot meal is not provided. Hearing about all these casseroles and biscuit and gravy combinations does nothing but make me hungry. For a breakfast that I won’t get to experience.

And sometimes the commercial will play twice during the same commercial break. Not back to back. But I’ll hear all the breakfast foods listed off, then I’ll get a car dealership screaming at me about this week’s hottest deals, then I’ll get all the breakfast foods again.

I just think the next school I work in needs to be near a Waffle House.

  1. I notice they try and target us with food commercials (sometimes disguised in a plumbing commercial) as a way to tempt us later on in the day. A pizza commercial is always on the radio before 8am which is just to get us to order it for dinner on the way home. I’m on to them.

Also, kids/teenagers these days make it clear that they don’t listen to the radio so why does the radio play music that only teenagers would be interested in? They should play music for the demographic that actually listens.
