Life Story: Chapter Sixty Seven

Welcome to a series of stories that basically make up my autobiography. It’s not entirely thorough, but I’ll do the best I can with the memories locked away inside my head. Could be therapeutic for me. Could be humorous for you. Either way, enjoy…

Previously on Life Story… I discovered that Greek Life was pointless at a school as small as Bluefield College.

As I entered my freshman year in college, Buffy Summers entered her senior year of high school. And I was missing it.

At this point in history, the WB network was still kind of a fledgling operation that didn’t get a lot of airplay in smaller markets. And Bluefield is nothing if not a smaller market. And since Buffy the Vampire Slayer came on the WB network, I didn’t get to watch it during my semester at Bluefield College.

Thankfully, I got by with a little help from my friends.

Remember Jessica? Pretty much one of my best friends since the first grade? Well she and Maranda, a fellow Patrick Henry survivor, were freshmen at Radford University, which wasn’t a crazy distance from Bluefield. And you know what channel they got? If you said the WB network, you’d be right!

So each Tuesday evening, I would make the hourish drive to Radford to visit my high school pals and watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I was also convinced to stay for what came on after Buffy. And it didn’t take long before I was hooked on Felicity. It helped that she was beginning her freshman year of college at the same time we were. All of her struggles were our struggles.

It was also during these weekly visits that I got the inside track on Napster and downloading free music and playing that free music through a little program called Winamp. Oh, 1998, what have we done without you?

All right, looking back, I feel that it may have been irresponsible for a freshman in college to drive to Radford once a week considering I had to pay for my own gas and I had no job. But it was Buffy! And if you have been paying any attention to this blog whatsoever, you know what a special place Sarah Michelle Gellar holds in my heart.
