Rewatching Buffy – Episode 64

buffy-titleWelcome to Rewatching Buffy, the part of the blog where I rewatch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Each Tuesday evening, you’re invited to join me as I attempt to rediscover what made me love this show 21 years ago.

Pangs

  • Some poor, nameless idiot is walking around campus at night.
  • Buffy finds him and just punches him in the face. Turns out he’s a vampire. And she easily dusts him.
  • But then she feels like she’s being watched.
  • Which she is… Angel is hiding in the bushes.
  • The next day, on campus, the dean and the head of anthropology are breaking ground on a new building.
  • Xander’s working with the construction crew.
  • Did we mention this is a Thanksgiving episode? Because, yeah, it’s a Thanksgiving episode.
  • As Xander digs, the ground opens up and he falls into some kind of subterranean chamber.
  • Don’t worry, it’s not an Initiative facility.
  • That night, Angel is being stalky again. Very Edward Cullen of you, Angel.
  • I’m sorry… I just referenced Twilight. I’ve brought shame upon my family. Let us never again speak of it.
  • In the dorm, Willow and Buffy are talking about what Xander fell into. Apparently it’s an old mission.
  • Buffy laments not getting a Thanksgiving this year because her mom is out of town. So she’s gonna have her own Thanksgiving.
  • Spike is still being hunted by Riley and his friends. Spike looks like death warmed over. He hasn’t been able to feed in quite some time, thanks to the chip in his brain.
  • Xander is sick and is unable to go to work. Anya is, kind of, taking care of him.
  • Meanwhile, in the underground mission, some kind of green mist rises from the ground. Probably a spirit of some kind. Could by why Xander is suddenly sick.
  • I find that TV characters don’t get sick without a reason.
  • Yeah, the green mist was a spirit. That of a Native American who slashes the anthropology professor’s throat.
  • As Buffy and Willow investigate her death, Willow mentions that the coroner’s report says she’s missing an ear.
  • Buffy notices that a Chumash knife is missing from its case.
  • Giles informs Buffy that the Chumash tribe were indigenous to the Sunnydale area.
  • Buffy is also prepping for Thanksgiving dinner, which will be held at Giles’ place.
  • When she heads out to pick up more food, Angel reveals that he’s been there the whole time. Giles is aware.
  • Angel reveals that he’s there because of Doyle’s vision. He doesn’t want Buffy to know he’s there because it could be a distraction for her.
  • Spike lurks outside a vamp nest. He envies their ability to feed on someone.
  • Angel bumps into Willow and lets her know he’s there to help Buffy. Mostly, he wants to ask Willow who the guy is that’s talking to Buffy.
  • It’s Riley. Who’s about to head home to Iowa.
  • Spike goes back to Harmony. She threatens to stake him unless he leaves.
  • Buffy goes to check out a lead that Angel gave to Giles. A priest named Father Gabriel whose family dates back to the time of the mission.
  • She gets there in time to find him being killed by the same Chumash spirit that killed the professor.
  • He tells Buffy that he’s the spirit of his people’s vengeance.
  • Willow’s research turns up that the Chumash tribe were once peaceful, but were slaughtered by the people who decided to take over the land.
  • Xander and Anya show up at Giles’ place. He’s still super sick.
  • Apparently he’s come down with all the diseases that white people passed on to the Chumash tribe… malaria, smallpox, syphilis… the usual.
  • The diseases should go away once they figure out how to put the spirit to rest.
  • Everyone at Buffy’s Thanksgiving is arguing. Should they sympathize with the spirit? Should they stop it outright?
  • And then Spike shows up. He’s begging for help. Willow backs his story that he can’t bite anyone.
  • “So you haven’t murdered anybody lately? Let’s be best pals!”
  • Then he decides to trade info on the Initiative. Sure, that’ll work.
  • The Chumash spirit is awakening more vengeful spirits. I think they’re going to try and ruin Buffy’s Thanksgiving.
  • They invite Spike into Giles’ place. But he’s tightly tied to a chair. Clearly there is no trust there.
  • Willow is still trying to argue that it’s wrong to kill this spirit of vengeance.
  • Spike delivers his brand of truth regarding the slaughter of the Chumash tribe. He points out that it’s what Caesar did, and he didn’t say, “I came, I conquered, I felt really bad about it.”
  • Willow, Anya, and Xander decide to go warn the dean, who they think will be the next victim.
  • Turns out the tribe of vengeance spirits show up at Giles’.
  • Angel figures out that a warrior spirit would go after the strongest warrior. Which is definitely Buffy.
  • The gang gets back to Giles’, including Angel. The fight breaks out, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to kill the spirits. Maybe because they’re already dead.
  • Buffy figures out that they can be killed by their own weapons. When she kills the leader, the rest of them vanish.
  • Once the battle is over, Angel sneaks off.
  • The gang sits down to dinner. Xander lets it slip that Angel was there to help. Oops…
  • Body count: Vampires – 1; Humans – 2
