Rewatching Buffy – Episode 40

buffy-titleWelcome to Rewatching Buffy, the part of the blog where I rewatch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Each Tuesday evening, you’re invited to join me as I attempt to rediscover what made me love this show 20 years ago.

Band Candy

  • While on patrol, Giles is helping Buffy prepare for the SATs.
  • Is that still a relevant thing? Do high school kids still take the SATs?
  • Oh, and Buffy kills a vampire, breaking her No. 2 pencil in the process. Luckily, Giles has a spare so they can keep working! You can always count on a librarian.
  • The Mayor is talking to Mr. Trick about getting something important done. A demon needs to be paid tribute, so Mr. Trick needs to keep the Slayer busy. He’s got someone in mind.
  • Snyder’s pointless assignment of the week: sell candy to raise money for the band’s new uniforms!
  • Something’s not right here… Buffy told Willow she couldn’t do SAT prep because she had to spend quality time with her mom. She told her mom she has to train with Giles. She told Giles she had to spend time with her mom…
  • But she’s really going to see Angel.
  • I feel like, when all this truth about Angel being back hits the open air, it’s gonna come back to bite Buffy in the butt.
  • Buffy gets back home after an extended Angel visit. Giles is there. Buffy was caught in her lie.
  • Joyce and Giles are enjoying some band candy while they argue with Buffy about how they’re still dealing with Buffy’s runaway summer.
  • Meanwhile, at the chocolate factory… Ethan Rayne is this week’s Willy Wonka. I mean, villain.
  • No, Willy Wonka works.
  • I guess Ethan is who Mr. Trick has hired to cause the distraction. So what’s wrong with the band candy?
  • The next day, Giles is supposed to be in charge of study hall. But he’s uncharacteristically late.
  • And Willow and Xander are doing flirty things.
  • Stop it, you two! You’re both in relationships!
  • Giles and Joyce are hanging out at Giles’ flat.
  • In fact, all the adults are acting weird. Immature…
  • There are tons of grown-ups hanging out at The Bronze.
  • All the adults have turned into teenagers. So this is Ethan’s distraction.
  • Distraction from what?
  • Buffy decides to head back to find Giles and points out that Giles as a teenager wasn’t exactly an upstanding citizen.
  • For more: see post about The Dark Age.
  • Giles, or Ripper as he likes to be called, is making out with Joyce on the hood of a police car. Something about that is just wrong.
  • Buffy’s figured out that the grown-ups are all distracted for a reason and heads to the chocolate factory.
  • And she finds Ethan Rayne.
  • Ethan spills on the tribute. Apparently it’s so big that no one in town would allow it to happen. And once the candy wears off, everyone will just blame themselves.
  • The tribute is babies. They’re gonna feed newborns to some demon. Classy.
  • Buffy and Giles find the tribute kids in the sewer and fight some henchvamps while Joyce protects the babies.
  • Buffy manages to incinerate the giant snake demon.
  • Body count: Vampires – 3; Baby-eating demons – 1
