Rewatching Buffy – Episode 35

buffy-titleWelcome to Rewatching Buffy, the part of the blog where I rewatch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Each Tuesday evening, you’re invited to join me as I attempt to rediscover what made me love this show 20 years ago.

So… Here’s the thing… I’m just doing one episode at a time. Unless there’s a week that I decide I have time to watch two. Or three. This week it’s just one. We pick up at the start of Season 3…

  • Willow, Xander, and Oz are on patrol in the graveyard. They survive, but let a vampire get away.
  • They reminisce about Buffy… school’s starting the next day… Buffy was expelled… they wish they knew where she was.
  • Buffy’s at the beach at sunset. Angel stands behind her… not bursting into flames.
  • Because it’s a dream. Angel’s still dead. And Buffy is in a tiny apartment in LA.
  • Buffy’s a waitress, going by the name Anne, where she willingly puts up with dirtbags that can’t seem to keep their hands off her. Because if she didn’t put up with it, she’d reveal she’s a superhero.
  • She comes across a young couple showing off their matching tattoos. I’m certain that will be important later.
  • Back in Sunnydale, the library is super busy for the first time ever.
  • Oz was supposed to graduate last year. But he didn’t. He’s repeating his senior year. Which means he gets to stay in school with the rest of the cast.
  • Back in LA, Buffy has basically derailed. It’s kind of depressing.
  • She walks down the sidewalk and notices an old homeless woman who says she’s “nobody.” I’m certain that will be important later.
  • Giles keeps following leads, trying to find Buffy, but they never pan out.
  • The girl with the matching tattoo recognized Buffy and bumps into her on the street. She was involved in the cult of vampire worshipers from last season that Buffy saved from Spike. She goes by Lily now.
  • An old man pushes past them, claiming to be no one. Then Buffy saves him from being hit by a car.
  • She’s unhurt when she gets hit by the car and runs away so people won’t ask too many questions.
  • She bumps into a guy named Ken who appears to be pimping a homeless shelter.
  • After checking a lead in Oakland, Giles stops by to let Joyce know it was another dead end.
  • Joyce blames Giles for Buffy running away… which really isn’t fair of her to do.
  • Lily can’t find Rickie (her matching tattoo guy). She comes to Buffy for help.
  • They check a plasma donation place where Rickie sometimes goes to get some extra cash. He hasn’t been in lately. But the nurse they talk to looks shifty.
  • Buffy checks around in some homeless hangouts. The old dude she saved from the car is lying there dead, having ingested drain cleaner. And he has Rickie’s tattoo! Dun-dun-duuuun…
  • How is Rickie, who was only 20 a couple days ago, a dead old man?
  • When Lily can’t deal with the news, she blames Buffy, accusing her of bringing monsters with her.
  • This sets Buffy off. She just wanted to be left alone. She didn’t ask Lily to come to her with her problems.
  • Upset, Lily bumps into Ken on the street. He tells her that Rickie is with his people.
  • Buffy decides to snoop through the files at the plasma joint. She wants to know the link between the blood bank and the missing kids.
  • Lily is being prepared for a “cleansing.” That can’t be a good thing.
  • The “cleansing” pool is actually a gateway to some kind of hell dimension. Buffy sees Lily get pulled in and jumps in after her.
  • She pulls Ken in, too. His face comes off. He’s a demon.
  • This place looks like a refinery of some kind. They abduct kids off the streets and use them as slaves.
  • Time moves differently, so they can work until they’re old and on the verge of death, but only a day will pass in the real world.
  • Back in Sunnydale, the Scooby Gang decide to use Cordelia as bait. It doesn’t work out as planned, but they manage to slay a vampire nonetheless.
  • Back in hell, a slave driver takes a new group for reprogramming. He asks a kid named Aaron (HEY!) who he is. He says he’s Aaron, for which he is beaten to death.
  • Everyone else gets with the program really quickly… “I’m no one.”
  • Buffy - AnneUntil slave driver gets to Buffy… “I’m Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, and you are?”
  • Then she kills slave driver and two of his buddies. Time for an escape from hell.
  • It’s kind of like when Indiana Jones freed the kids from the mines under the Temple of Doom.
  • Lily helps slaves escape while Buffy fights a whole mess of demons. I’m only pretty sure Buffy kills one demon during the brawl.
  • Lily pushes Ken off a high ledge while he gives a speech about why the humans shouldn’t rebel.
  • But Ken doesn’t die. Yet. He chases after the escapees and then Buffy bashes his skull in with Lucille.
  • After climbing out of hell, the gateway seals itself.
  • Buffy is giving Lily her apartment and her job at the diner. And her name, apparently. Lily becomes Anne (this becomes important if you watch Angel’s spin-off in the years to come)…
  • Buffy heads back to Sunnydale. That’s probably gonna be awkward.
  • I mean, she and Joyce have a nice hug. But it’s still probably gonna be awkward…
  • Body count: Vampires – 1; Demons – 5
