Stand Up

Remember a few weeks ago when I came to the blogging community for advice? I was about to take the stage as part of the entertainment for a thing with a group from my church. And I had no idea what I would actually be doing.

I settled on a stand-up comedy routine. And Kristen reminded me yesterday that I have neglected to let you all know how that went.

I think it’s safe to say that, one day in the not too distant future, when I’m sitting behind the desk at The Tonight Show, I’ll be able to look back on that night as the night it all began for me.

Yeah… I was a hit.

Okay, that may be false bravado. It went all right. I won’t actually be quitting my job to become a stand-up comedian. But here’s a little of how it went…

I started off with a knock-knock joke. Because those are classic. Actually, a few days before the event, I asked a friend’s four-year-old to tell me his best knock-knock joke. It goes something like this: Knock-knock. Who’s there? Bananahead. Bananahead who? Bananahead Eyeball.

I really didn’t get it. But it got a big laugh from the crowd.

I went into a rant on Disney princesses, most of which was based on my Dater’s Guide to Disney Princesses posts that I did a while back. Those got some laughs, too.

And then I wrapped things up by performing “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables as Gollum from Lord of the Rings. That was actually a big hit.

I wish I could say the Gollum/Les Miz mashup was an original idea. I actually saw a guy on YouTube doing it years ago.

Speaking of video… A friend recorded snippets of my “act” and I put it on YouTube. You’ll see the end of the knock knock joke and part of the song toward the end. You know, if you want to watch it.

  1. Yes!!! It sounded like they really liked you! Also- Excellent choice to wear the suit.

Whenever I tell a good story to a group of friends, I always secretly imagine I’m on a comedy stage receiving a roaring response from a massive crowd. Maybe one day I’ll get the balls to try it out like you did and see how it goes.

  2. Happy to hear it went well! I’m still trying to figure out what Bananahead Eyeball means, but I’m started to think that it’s on a level of comedy that is way beyond my grasp.
