The Worst 80 – Teen Wolf Too

Welcome to Movie Mondays, a weekly blog series that takes you on a cinematic odyssey through the world of film! Each week, we’ll dive into a list of my 100 least favorite movies, exploring what makes them fall short and discussing the lessons we can learn from their missteps. Remember that these low-ranking films are only that way based on my personal opinion. Something I hate may be something you love and no offense is intended. Wherever these movies fall for you, I invite you to grab some popcorn and join in on the debate over these films’ merits!

Teen Wolf Too

1987

Directed by Christopher Leitch

Oh boy, where do I even begin with Teen Wolf Too? This 1987 fantasy comedy sequel is like the disappointing younger sibling of the beloved original Teen Wolf. It’s as if the filmmakers took everything that made the first movie charming and tossed it out the window, replacing it with a lackluster plot and a cast that just couldn’t quite fill the shoes of their predecessors.

First off, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: no Michael J. Fox. I mean, how do you make a Teen Wolf sequel without the star that made the original so darn likable? Instead, we get Jason Bateman in his feature film debut as Todd Howard, the cousin of Fox’s character. While Bateman is a talented actor, he just doesn’t have the same charisma and charm that Fox brought to the role.

The plot is pretty much a rehash of the first movie, with Todd heading off to Hamilton University on a boxing scholarship, only to discover that he’s inherited the family’s werewolf genes. Cue the predictable “wolf-out” scenes, the newfound popularity, and the eventual realization that being true to yourself is what really matters. Yawn.

What really grinds my gears is the recasting of some key characters from the original. Coach Finstock is now played by Paul Sand, and Stuart Fratkin takes over as Stiles. It’s like they didn’t even try to get the original actors back. I mean, if you’re going to make a sequel, at least put in some effort to maintain continuity, right?

The only bright spots in this otherwise forgettable film are the few returning cast members, James Hampton as Uncle Harold Howard and Mark Holton as Chubby. But even their presence can’t save this sinking ship.

Behind the scenes, the film was directed by Christopher Leitch and written by R. Timothy Kring. I can only imagine the pitch meeting: “Hey, let’s take a beloved movie and strip away everything that made it great! It’ll be a surefire hit!” Spoiler alert: it wasn’t.

In conclusion, Teen Wolf Too is a prime example of a unnecessary and poorly executed sequel. It’s like they took the original, removed its heart and soul, and expected audiences to still care. Well, I for one didn’t buy it. But hey, that’s just my two cents. What did you think of this movie? Let me know in the comments below, and we can commiserate together over this cinematic misfire.
