Question of the Week #393

From Gregory Stock’s The Book of Questions: If you could earn the same pay no matter what job you did, would you pursue another profession? If so, what would you choose and why?

It’s a tempting thought, isn’t it? Imagine getting paid the same amount whether you’re a brain surgeon, a professional dog walker, or a full-time Netflix binge-watcher. The possibilities are endless!

But here’s the thing – even if money weren’t an issue, I wouldn’t trade my current job for anything else. No, I’m not just saying that because my boss might be reading this (hey Hollie!). I’m saying it because I genuinely love what I do.

Sure, there are days when I fantasize about pursuing my childhood dream of being a professional comic book artist/writer or a mattress tester (is that even a real job?). But at the end of the day, I find fulfillment in my current role. I get to tackle new challenges, collaborate with awesome people, and contribute to something meaningful.

Plus, let’s be real – if I suddenly decided to switch careers and become, say, a professional mime, I’d probably expect a pay bump. I mean, have you seen how much those invisible boxes cost these days?

Now, don’t get me wrong – I’m not knocking anyone who would jump at the chance to switch things up. If you’ve always wanted to be a lion tamer or a professional bubble blower, more power to you! But for me, I’m content right where I am.

Of course, that doesn’t mean I don’t have other creative pursuits I’d love to explore. I’ve always dreamed of writing a bestselling novel or learning to play the ukulele. But I like to think of those as side hustles rather than full-time gigs. After all, I’ve got bills to pay and a dog to feed (he’s very demanding).

So, dear readers, I turn the question over to you: If pay weren’t a factor, would you switch jobs? What would you choose to do instead, and why? Let me know in the comments below – I promise I won’t judge, even if your dream job involves taste-testing different flavors of cardboard.

Just remember, the grass is always greener and all that jazz. But if you’ve found a job that brings you joy and fulfillment, hold onto it tight – even if it doesn’t come with a corner office and a personal masseuse.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some important business to attend to. And by “important business,” I mean watching cat videos on YouTube. Hey, it’s all in a day’s work!

  1. I’m conflictes on this one – because my current place of employment is a hot bed of highschool drama and nonprofessionalism LOL so if I could switch jobs, I probably would! And I have been looking at other positions. But I also love my job! SO MUCH!! To the point where its a month before it starts again and I’m excitedly planning and buying and prepping for it.

Could it be possible to use that money and change my coworkers instead of me changing jobs?!
