From Gregory Stock’s The Book of Questions: Viagra was just the beginning. If there were two new drugs, one to raise your sex drive for 24 hours, the other to lower it, do you think you’d use either of them regularly–for example, increasing your sex drive for recreation and lowering it if you had work to do?
Hey there, fellow humans! In today’s world of pharmaceutical wonders, it seems like there’s a pill for everything. Need to focus? There’s a pill for that. Can’t sleep? Pop a pill. Feeling a bit blue? You guessed it – there’s a pill. But hold on to your hats, folks, because the latest hypothetical wonder drugs are all about controlling your sex drive. That’s right, imagine a world where you could pop a pill to rev up your libido for a wild weekend, then take another to cool things down when it’s time to focus on work. Sounds like an episode of Black Mirror, doesn’t it?
Well, call me old-fashioned, but I think I’ll pass on these newfangled libido-controlling drugs. I mean, what’s the point? Is our society so obsessed with instant gratification and productivity that we need to chemically manipulate our most primal instincts? Whatever happened to good old-fashioned self-control and prioritization?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for medical advancements that improve people’s lives, but this just seems like a slippery slope. First, it’s Viagra to help with erectile dysfunction, then it’s pills to boost your sex drive, and before you know it, we’ll have pills to make you fall in love with anyone or anything. I can see the headlines now: “New pill makes you fall in love with your job! Productivity skyrockets!”
Call me crazy, but I think there’s something to be said for letting nature take its course. Sure, there are times when work demands our full attention, and other times when we just want to let loose and have some fun. But do we really need pills to navigate these normal fluctuations in our desires? What happens when we become so reliant on these drugs that we can’t function without them?
Maybe I’m just a hopeless romantic, but I believe that the ebb and flow of our libido is part of what makes us human. It’s a reflection of our emotional state, our stress levels, and our overall well-being. By popping pills to artificially control these natural rhythms, aren’t we just masking underlying issues that we should be addressing head-on?
But hey, that’s just my two cents. I’m sure there are plenty of folks out there who would jump at the chance to have a 24-hour sex drive on demand. And who knows, maybe these hypothetical drugs would be a godsend for some people. But as for me, I think I’ll stick to the tried-and-true methods of managing my desires: a healthy dose of self-awareness and maybe a cold shower now and then.
So, dear readers, what do you think? Would you be first in line to try these libido-controlling wonder drugs, or are you content to let your body do its own thing? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments below – just keep it PG, folks!

hms This is a weird one 🤣 I’ve got to say from personal experience, I wouldn’t need the increase drive pill but sometimes a decrease pill would be lovely to focus on other things LOL but also its easy to take care of those urges so maybe its fine?
