From Gregory Stock’s The Book of Questions: If you could place yourself anywhere on a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is having security and comfort and goals within easy reach, and 10 is taking risks, struggling, and reaching for great achievement, what number would you like to be at, and why? Where are you now?
Hey friends! Today it’s all about that perpetual tug-of-war between playing it safe and taking risks. You know what I mean – that little angel on one shoulder telling you to stick to the easy path, and the little devil on the other urging you toward more excitement and reward, consequences be damned!
Placing those voices on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is complete security and 10 is struggling like crazy to reach for something big, if I could choose, where would I want to fall on that scale? And where do I realistically think I land right now?
After some back and forth with my shoulder angels, I’ve decided I’d choose to be at a 6 or 7. I like a little struggle and uncertainty – it keeps life interesting! But I don’t have the risk tolerance to live at a constant 10, chasing big hairy goals and dealing with the inevitable failures and roadblocks. I need some security and comfort too.
As for where I actually fall on the scale… I’d say a 4 or 5 at the moment. I have a pretty stable life without too much uncertainty. But I’m starting to get a little bored and antsy for more adventure! I’m aiming to inch myself up toward that sweet spot at 6 or 7 this year by taking a few more chances. Maybe finally tackling that side YouTube channel I’ve had simmering on the back burner. Or doing some travel that takes me out of my comfort zone.
What about you? Where would you want to fall on the struggle scale, and where do you think you realistically land? Hit me up in the comments – I’d love to discuss! Do you crave more stability or excitement? And what’s one change you could make this year to tweak your struggle score toward your ideal number?
I believe I am between 4-5 at present, but I am praying and trying to move forward. Hey, I went gambling today and doubled my money which was a risk, in itself.

I am generally risk averse. So I would place myself around 4 or 5. – Pradeep / bpradeepnair.blogspot.com
