If you’re anything like me, you love to kick back and get lost in a gripping documentary series. Especially when it comes to the true crime genre – there’s just something about those shocking real-life stories that I find utterly fascinating. It’s the same reason I used to love watching Unsolved Mysteries as a kid.
And since before the pandemic hit, I’ve been absolutely glued to my screen, plowing through dozens of phenomenal docu-series that explore some truly bizarre tales. From sex cults to serial killers, these shows have it all. So grab some snacks and let me tell you about a few that are certainly worth a watch (or several)!
First up is The Vow on HBO, diving deep into the twisted NXIVM organization. Led by the ever-creepy Keith Raniere, this group carried out all kinds of fraudulent activity and disturbing practices (we’re talking branding members and developing a secret sex slave sorority). The series provides an intimate look at former members, including Smallville actress Allison Mack’s integral involvement. It’s a dark story that unfolds slowly, revealing layer upon layer of manipulation. A little repetitive at times, but definitely a compelling exposé.
Next on my must-see list is I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, also on HBO. This one follows the riveting investigations of late author Michelle McNamara as she researched the infamous Golden State Killer. As much as McNamara tried to hide her own demons while working on the book, the series gives viewers rare insight into her obsessive quest for answers right up until her shocking death. Sensitively pieced together, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark manages to be respectful yet gripping.
And I’d be remiss not to mention Abducted in Plain Sight – possibly the most bizarre tale of all. Chronicling multiple kidnappings of Jan Broberg as a child in the 70s, the twists and turns in this story are almost unbelievable. From tales of manipulation and grooming to the unbelievable obliviousness of Jan’s parents, this one left me constantly shaking my head in shock.
I don’t know about you, but I seriously can’t get enough of these wild real-life stories! Let me know in the comments if you have any other jaw-dropping documentary recommendations for me to add to my watchlist. I’m always happy to hear about new shows to feed my true crime obsession!
I just searched for Jan Broberg online and only read the Wikipedia page…and like WOW!! How bizarre.
