53 – There Will Be Blood

Welcome to The Best Movies I’ve Never Seen! This is the part of the blog where I work my way through 100 films I’ve never seen that are generally considered to be great. You’re invited to watch along with me if you can find a copy or find it streaming. So grab some popcorn and let’s get started!

There Will Be Blood

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson

Quick synopsis… In this expansive drama, ambitious prospector Daniel Plainview strikes it rich when he buys the oil rights to a California family’s ranch. As he turns a simple village into a boomtown, Plainview stokes the ire of a charismatic young preacher.

I’ve never had much of a desire to watch this movie. I’ve never considered myself much of a fan of Paul Thomas Anderson’s films, even though I’ve only seen a couple of them. And I’ve never considered myself much of a fan of Daniel Day-Lewis, either. But I’m glad I’ve finally taken time to see There Will Be Blood.

That said, it’s a hard movie to watch. It’s a fascinating look at the turn of the 20th century and the kinds of people that were striking oil in the American frontier. It’s crazy to see how capitalism and greed could simultaneously build up and destroy at the same time.

While I say I’m not necessarily a fan of Daniel Day-Lewis, he does an outstanding job portraying Daniel Plainview. I don’t think I have to be a fan of the actor to admit that he is a brilliant actor.

We witness as Plainview rises to wealth and power only to sink into depravity, alcoholism, and murderous rage. It’s disturbing to watch him fall apart losing pieces of himself over time… the effects of his own greed.

Yeah, it’s a difficult watch, but well worth seeing if you haven’t. Having now seen There Will Be Blood, it ranks at number 493 out of 2,285 movies on my personal Flickchart list.

Have you seen There Will Be Blood? What did you think of it? Let me know your thoughts down in the comments!

  1. Finally another movie I’ve seen. I watched and reviewed it a while back when I was doing a marathon of Daniel Day-Lewis movies where he won Best Actor. I agree that There Will Be Blood was difficult to watch, but for me that was mostly because of the subject matter not interesting me. That being said, Day-Lewis made it come to life with his captivating performance.
