A to Z Challenge – Krypto

Welcome to the 2021 A to Z Challenge! My theme this year is DC Comics. And that’s mostly because of my undying affection for the comic book characters and stories that I grew up reading in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. So stay tuned all month to (maybe) learn a little something about 26 corners of the DC Multiverse.

I know what you’re probably thinking… He left the N off of Krypton. But, no… I’m not focusing on Superman’s home planet. I’m focusing on Superman’s dog, Krypto.

When I was a kid and getting into Superman comics, it was in that time when the DC Universe was trying to simplify everything to the least common denominator. That’s probably a horrible mathematical analogy, but I don’t care.

In simplifying Superman, they wanted to get back to the idea that he was truly the “Last Son of Krypton.” So that meant no Supergirl, no General Zod, no random Kryptonians escaping the Phantom Zone. It was just Kal-El. Superman would be Krypton’s only survivor.

This also wiped away the idea of Superman having a pet Kryptonian dog who had all those amazing Kryptonian powers under a yellow sun. Again, I’m not sure how things went back in the Silver Age when comic stories were at their craziest, but I’m aware that at some point there was an entire Legion of Super-Pets.

Krypto was the super dog. Streaky was the super cat. Beppo was the super monkey. And Comet was the super horse. Crazy, right?

Keep in mind, the Silver Age was when you had about four dozen types of Kryptonite and there were Bizarro versions of everyone.

As I was saying, by the time I started reading the comic books, Krypto no longer existed. But I knew that he had been Superman’s dog at some point back in the day. So I thought it was kind of cute when they dropped a Krypto Easter egg into a story following the Death of Superman.

I’m pretty sure it happened during the Reign of the Supermen storyline. A character named Bibbo, who owned the Ace o’ Clubs down near Hobs Bay, saved a puppy from drowning. Bibbo was one of those side characters who showed up a lot in Superman’s titles during the 90s. Anyway, he saved this little white dog and decided to take him in. He wanted to name the dog Krypton, after Superman’s home planet. But when he went to get the dog tag made, there was a six letter limit. So he was stuck with a tag that said Krypto.

I don’t really know what happened to that little dog from there. He may have followed the Superboy clone over to his own title following the Reign of the Supermen. Not too sure, though. I didn’t really follow Superboy in those days.

It happened again that something was introduced to continuity while I was in college and not buying comics anymore. Pretty sure that’s when they reintroduced Krypto the Super Dog into Superman’s world. Don’t quote me, but I’m pretty sure there was a story where Superman’s origin was altered and he wound up traveling back in time to before Krypton was destroyed. He met his father, Jor-El, and returned to the present with his dog.

Not too sure about Krypto’s story during the 2000s, but eventually he wound up living with Superboy and the Kents on the farm in Smallville. Beyond that, I really have no clue where Krypto is these days. I don’t know if he was erased by the New 52 reality or if he’s been re-reintroduced to continuity.

If Krypto isn’t around, I think he should be. He’s a good boy.

Did you know Superman had a dog named Krypto? What have I left out about the Super Dog? Let me know your thoughts down in the comments below!
