Rewatching Angel – Episode 38

Angel - TitleWelcome to Rewatching Angel, the part of the blog where I rewatch the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off: Angel. Each Tuesday evening, you’re invited to join me as I attempt to rediscover what made me love these shows so many years ago.

Epiphany

  • Remember last week? Angel and Darla got it on…
  • So we’re expecting Angel to wake up in pain as his soul is ripped from his body, right?
  • I mean, that’s what happened last time we saw him have sex with someone.
  • Darla follows him onto the balcony as he writhes in pain, telling him not to fight it.
  • “It’ll only hurt for a minute.”
  • But she’s disappointed to realize he still has his soul.
  • He’s sorry he couldn’t save her, but thanks her for saving him.
  • She doesn’t understand, claiming that what they just did was perfect.
  • He agrees. But it wasn’t perfect happiness. It was perfect despair.
  • There’s nothing he can do for her now. He can’t even hate her.
  • But he warns her that the next time he sees her, he will have to kill her.
  • Angel realizes that Kate’s call to him last night was a call for help.
  • He gets to her in time to revive her, getting her to cough up all the pills she took in an attempt at suicide.
  • Kate thanks him then tells him to get out.
  • Darla returns to Lindsey’s apartment, where he informs her that Wolfram & Hart’s official policy with her is now to stake on sight.
  • Lindsey figures out that Darla slept with Angel and wants to know what happened. He wants to know if Angel lost his soul.
  • Really, he’s super jealous.
  • Angel goes to the Host, who explains to him that he’s had a moment of clarity.
  • But Angel’s afraid he won’t be able to move on after the questionable things he’s done in recent weeks.
  • Angel wants to know what to do next, but the Host tells him that he’s not his link to the Powers That Be… he never was and never will be. That’s Cordelia’s role.
  • And the odds are not in his old crew’s favor that they will survive the night.
  • Cordelia arrives at the Sharp house. The front door is ajar and the lights are all out.
  • Why is she going inside?
  • She finds the entire family dead in the kitchen before getting a vision of herself being attacked by the same demon that killed the family.
  • And then she’s attacked.
  • The demons also track down Wesley at his apartment.
  • Angel shows up just in time and they manage to kill the two demons that were ready to take him.
  • Angel drives Wes to their new office and attempts to bond with him, but Wes isn’t having it.
  • But Wes still fills Angel in on the case with the Sharp family and the demon spawn inside her head.
  • When the demons holding Cordelia become aware that two of their own have been killed, they decide to insert their spawn into her head.
  • At the team’s office, Angel finds no sign of Cordelia. He tries to assume that she’s out with friends.
  • Wes breaks the news, harshly, that Cordelia leads a fairly solitary life these days, thanks to the fact that she still gets the visions that Angel so easily turned his back on.
  • Gunn arrives and they figure out that Cordelia went to the Sharps’ house.
  • Cordelia now has a third eye in the back of her head.
  • It’s a sign of the demon’s spawn, but before it hatches from her skull, it’s useful. She can actually see behind her.
  • On the way to the house, Angel’s car is attacked by the demons.
  • Angel stops to fight the demons and tells Gunn to drive on to save Cordelia.
  • Unfortunately, Lindsey shows up in his beat up old truck and runs Angel down before he can take down the demons.
  • Lindsey goes after him with a sledgehammer.
  • Jealousy is so stupid.
  • Angel refuses to tell Lindsey what happened between him and Darla.
  • So then Lindsey goes back to his truck to get a stake, and then Angel comes up right behind him and beats the crap out of him.
  • Then he smashes Lindsey’s prosthetic hand with his own hammer.
  • Oh, and Angel steals his truck to get to the house.
  • The demons catch Gunn and Wes, but Angel gets there just before they have their heads implanted with spawn.
  • Angel takes down three of the demons while Wes works his mojo to remove Cordelia’s third eye.
  • The next morning, Lindsey returns to his apartment. His truck is returned with a thank you note on the smashed windshield.
  • Darla has cleared out.
  • Kate visits Angel and is actually doing okay and is genuinely grateful that he saved her.
  • They talk about Angel’s epiphany and how he realized the importance of fighting the good fight. Not for redemption or reward or getting the bad guy. But because it’s worth fighting.
  • Kate reveals that she now has faith that they’re not alone in this fight because she never invited Angel into her apartment.
  • Angel shows up later at the team’s office. He apologizes and offers to work for them.
  • Cordelia has a vision and then wonders why she’s not on the floor this time.
  • Because Angel was fast enough to catch her.
  • Body count: Demons – 2
