Rewatching Buffy – Episode 89

buffy-titleWelcome to Rewatching Buffy, the part of the blog where I rewatch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Each Tuesday evening, you’re invited to join me as I attempt to rediscover what made me love this show 21 years ago.

  • As we’re reminded that Riley left town, Xander and Anya’s relationship is clearly growing stronger.
  • Then they wonder how Buffy is dealing with it.
  • Cut to a convent. The kind with nuns.
  • Buffy is fighting a vampire here, which she handily slays.
  • Then she asks a nun about life in the convent.
  • Guess that’s how she’s dealing…
  • Buffy is training with Giles and they’re talking about his upcoming trip to request information about Glory from the Watcher’s Council.
  • She makes sure he’s not going to fill the Council in on the whole Dawn-is-the-Key thing.
  • Willow offers to help Anya with the Magic Box while Giles is out of town, but Anya doesn’t really want Willow’s help.
  • Tension is building between these two.
  • Dawn and Buffy share a nice moment talking about Riley. Dawn is actually not saying the wrong things for a change.
  • Meanwhile, Spike has a practice conversation with a Buffy mannequin that turns into him destroying the mannequin.
  • I don’t think he’s quite figured out how to talk to his mortal enemy like he’s actually got feelings for her.
  • Willow and Tara decide to use store inventory to experiment with some spells. Anya’s not happy about this.
  • And she shouldn’t be happy about it. It’s stealing.
  • “Giles would be totally fine with this,” says Willow.
  • Then when aren’t you doing this while Giles is in town?
  • Tension is building between these two. More.
  • When Willow accidentally makes the cash register disappear and reappear in a broken state, it makes things worse.
  • Xander is tired of getting pulled into the middle of this thing between Willow and Anya. He tells them to work it out before leaving.
  • Later, Willow goes on with her spell, but Anya is inventorying every ingredient.
  • As with most spells, it goes wrong. And it releases a giant troll who begins smashing everything in sight with his giant hammer.
  • Buffy and Tara go to the Magic Box and see the mess left behind by the troll.
  • Willow and Anya took Giles’ car to chase after him.
  • The troll makes his way to The Bronze, where Xander and Spike are… bonding?
  • Everyone else arrives at The Bronze and the troll reveals that he and Anya used to date.
  • Turns out, Anya turned him into a troll because he cheated on her. Which is what got her the job as a vengeance demon back in the day.
  • Willow works on reversing the spell that released the troll while Buffy fights him.
  • Unfortunately, the fight does some really serious damage to The Bronze, pretty much taking out the entire upper level.
  • The troll gets away, Buffy and Spike help the hurt people in The Bronze, Xander and Tara follow the troll, and Anya and Willow head back to the shop to find a spell that will really get rid of the troll.
  • This is when Willow and Anya have a real talk.
  • Willow worries that Anya is going to hurt Xander. Her track record isn’t on her side.
  • Anya worries that Willow will always win out because of her history with Xander.
  • The troll arrives and gets ready to kill the girls. Xander steps in and tries to fight him.
  • The troll admires his bravery and says that he will only kill one of the women. And Xander gets to choose.
  • When Xander refuses to choose, the troll breaks his arm. When he still refuses, the troll threatens to kill him.
  • Buffy arrives and Anya lets her know the troll’s strength is in his hammer.
  • Willow uses a spell to get the hammer away from the troll.
  • Then Buffy knocks him out… I mean, after a decent fight.
  • Willow is then able to send the unconscious troll to an alternate universe filled with trolls.
  • Giles returns and reveals that the Watchers’ Council doesn’t know anything about Glory. Yet.
  • But using the information that Giles provided, they’ll be doing their digging.
  • Dawn overhears Giles talking with Buffy and Joyce about the Key.
  • Y’all… I’m already excited about next week’s episode. One of my all time favorites.
  • Body count: Vampires – 1
