Question of the Week #32

QuestionWould you accept twenty years of extraordinary happiness and fulfillment if it meant you would die at the end of the period?

Sure. Who doesn’t like to be happy? And hey, at least I know I’d die happy, right?

Not a deep answer, I know. But I’m kind of tired today. Still getting over a headache that I’ve kind of had all week. So if you have your own deeper answers, please share in the comments…

*The Question of the Week can be found in The Book of Questions by Gregory Stock, Ph.D.

  1. Answering this might depend greatly on one’s age. With this, I’d die at the age of 57, which is youngish but not highly unexpected, I suppose. If I was 20 or younger, I’d probably say no.

This is a hard one… I think I would go for it, but only because it also mentioned fulfillment. I think people can be happy while also not feeling fulfilled. That might be ok for a while, but it would drive me crazy after a few days or weeks. But I’m not one prone to being genuinely happy.

However, if I thought there were people that would be devastated by my dying in 20 years, I’m not sure I could be truly happy. I’d be worried about how much pain I’d be imparting to them as the time approached. That’s assuming I have any impact on others to that extent though. Who knows- maybe I’m overestimating how much people would like me then? I mean, if I’d been extraordinarily happy and fulfilled for 20 years, people may have become greatly jealous and walked out of my life, or at least wanted to.

Ok, I’ll be sitting here over-thinking things per usual.

Hope your headaches go away soon. I fully understand how frustrating and difficult life can be with those long stretches of headaches.

  2. Oh baby I’m so sorry to hear you’re in pain. Believe me, I know how not fun that feels. Facing a short life expectancy myself, I can say that I’m content with my life. However, my one regret will certainly be in leaving my poor child too soon. It breaks my heart every single day and he’s the reason I’m fighting tooth and nail to stay alive as long as humanly possible.
Feel better soon my dear. 💖
