From Gregory Stock’s The Book of Questions: Who would you turn to if you needed help? Why? Do you think that person would think of you if they were in a fix?
The holidays always get me thinking about who matters most in my life. When times are tough or I’m in a jam, there are a few people I know I can always count on for help – my mom topping that short list.
As long as my mother is around, she’ll be the first person I call if I’m in trouble. We all need that nurturing, comforting voice of our moms sometimes, no matter how old we get. I’m lucky to still have her in my life, and I know she’d drop everything in an instant if I asked for help. Mothers have a sixth sense about these things. She always seems to know when something is wrong or when I’m struggling, even if I try to hide it.
After mom, there are a handful of close friends I’m certain I could turn to. We’ve been through thick and thin together over the years, and I’d trust them with my life. That said, I’m not sure I’d be the first person they’d call if they were in a tough spot themselves. I try to be a good friend, but I know I can be distant at times or get wrapped up in my own problems. It’s something I’m working on.
How about you? Who comes to mind when you need help or a shoulder to lean on? Do you think they would call you if they were in a bind? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments! At the end of the day, we all need people in our lives who care about us unconditionally. Make sure to appreciate those individuals and reciprocate that support when you can.
