The Comedy Scene is Booming

Laughter is the best medicine, and luckily there are plenty of talented comedians providing the laughs these days. The stand-up and sketch comedy scenes are thriving, with exciting new voices drawing big crowds. In this post, let’s highlight some of the rising talents that are wowing audiences and poised for even bigger things.

One of the fastest rising stars is Nate Bargatze. This Tennessee native has become a regular on late night TV with his laidback, observational comedy. He keeps things relatable with jokes about everyday topics like airports, grocery shopping, and trying to exercise. Bargatze has a knack for finding humor in the mundane and his delivery is so effortless you feel like you’re just chatting with a funny friend. He has even had his own stand-up specials on Netflix and Amazon Prime, spreading his chilled-out comedy to new fans.

Speaking of Netflix specials, Taylor Tomlinson also has a couple of successful specials on the streaming platform. At only 30 years old, she hilariously analyzes the challenges of becoming an adult today. Topics like dating apps, therapy, and managing anxiety come alive through her conversational yet perfectly-crafted jokes. Tomlinson has a self-deprecating style blended with sharp wit that makes her instantly likable. It’s no wonder she’s been chosen to host After Midnight on CBS, the late-night talk show that has replaced James Corden’s Late Late Show. She’s in her second week and it’s actually pretty funny.

Beyond stand-up, sketch comedy is thriving lately too. The Astronomy Club broke new ground as the first all-black sketch troupe to be featured on Netflix. They tackle timely topics like social media, cultural appropriation, and politics with incisive humor. Meanwhile, I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson has become a viral sensation with its absurdist sketches. Robinson’s unhinged and extremely specific characters take mundane situations to ridiculous new heights.

There are too many fresh comedy talents to name them all here! John Mulaney, Ali Wong, Jo Firestone, and Jaboukie Young-White are just a few more comedians to check out. The scene continues to expand with new perspectives.

Who are your favorite new comedy voices? Share your thoughts in the comments! Comedy is always better enjoyed together.

  1. It’s all thanks to TikTok! So many struggling/up and coming comedians are posting bite-sized clips of their standup. It’s digestible, and if you have a face for it, it’s a great way to get your jokes in front of people who are nowhere near a comedy club. I’m interested to see how this shapes the industry for sure. Because for all the successful people you listed, there are the Matt Rifes of the world too…
