Instacart Insanity

Warning: This post is another “Get off my lawn” rant.

I’ve said it before and I know I’ll say it again… The pandemic and subsequent lockdown of 2020 taught me how to be an anxious individual.

Throughout most of my life, I’ve considered myself to be fairly laid back. And, generally speaking, when I’m interacting with others, I can still be described as pretty laid back… flexible…

But as an introvert who kind of enjoyed being stuck at home every day for several months, I got used to the idea of things being delivered to my doorstep. If I didn’t feel like cooking, I had DoorDash or Uber Eats to pick up something from any number of local restaurants. And if I didn’t feel like braving the crowded grocery store, there was Instacart.

It’s a great idea… when you have a responsible and competent shopper who’s picking up your groceries for you. You go online, you fill your virtual shopping cart with anything you need, then you pay and you’re done. If your shopper gets to the store and an item you’ve picked is sold out, they can get in touch with you to see if you want a replacement. You get texts letting you know when the shopper has checked out and when they’re on their way.

For a long time, this worked out great. Because I’ve learned to hate crowds. Don’t get me wrong… I’m not afraid of COVID or some other social disease. I just don’t like people. I deal with people every day with work. I’ve had my fill by the end of my work day. So I don’t want to have to deal with a store full of strangers. Even though we’re no longer on lockdown, I’ve found Instacart to be an incredibly useful tool to have in my arsenal.

Until recently…

I don’t know what it is with these delivery apps these days. When I first started using them, things were going so well. These days, whether it’s Instacart or DoorDash for food delivery, I seem to be getting the bottom of the barrel when it comes to the “shoppers” or “dashers.”

I can’t tell you how many times I haven’t received a meal I’ve ordered from DoorDash because the “dasher” can’t follow simple directions and winds up delivering to the wrong building. Sometimes, they get into the building (because I have to buzz them in), but they seem incapable of finding my apartment. Do I need to post a sign in the lobby giving specific instructions on the various different paths one could take to reach my door? It’s not like my building is a labyrinth.

The last two times I’ve attempted to order groceries through Instacart, I buzzed them into the building, but then they left everything in the lobby. The most recent shopper left everything in the lobby and didn’t even communicate that she was leaving everything down there. I had to go looking for my groceries to make sure they were somewhere to be found.

Look… If I wanted to leave my apartment, I’d have gone shopping myself. The whole reason I add the extra funds to my grocery budget is so I can enjoy the convenience of having those groceries delivered to my door.

And you can call me lazy. I don’t care. I hate grocery shopping and this is supposed to be a way to allow me to avoid that task.

What happened to all those go-getters who were running around for DoorDash and Instacart during the pandemic? The ones who actually followed directions and were able to find my apartment? Because, seriously, it seems like the people doing the job (around here anyway) couldn’t care less about doing the job they’ve signed up for.

  1. Oh goodness! Im always anxious when using these types of things cos I live in the basement and my door is around the side of the building. I usually go outside to meet the driver. But I never considered the hassle of having to deal with apartment deliveries!
