Welcome to the 2022 April A to Z Challenge! Each day (minus Sundays) in the month of April will feature a short work of fiction based on a random word beginning with the corresponding letter of the day. Those random words will be provided by various friends and family members throughout the month. Today’s word, kangaroo, was provided by my friend, Kathryn. Each story is loosely connected to the one before but will make more sense if you read them all in order. To go back to the beginning to see where this madness began, click here…
Beast Boy watched the skies as Red Volcano exploded high above San Francisco. Knowing the civilians were now safe from potential disaster, his concern turned to Conner, who he had seen lift the android into the air. From the ground, the Teen Titans had no way of knowing if Superboy had been able to get away from the blast.
He transformed into an eagle, taking advantage of the bird’s keen eyesight. Even from this distance, he could see Superboy. He was falling. He was unconscious. And he was dropping toward the Pacific. As an eagle, Beast Boy flew toward the bay then transformed into a dolphin, allowing him to quickly swim toward the location where Conner may splash down.
On the surface of the water, Kid Flash rocketed past the green dolphin. It was all Gar could do to try and keep up.
It was at this point that Gar noticed a whirlpool forming up ahead. The whirlpool seemed to invert, becoming more of a waterspout that extended from the ocean’s surface. He watched as the water reached up and gently snatched Superboy out of the sky. What the…? Beast Boy thought, still swimming toward the waterspout.
Under the surface, Beast Boy spotted Aqualad, the tattoos on his arms glowed a bright blue as he utilized his hydrokinetic powers to safely carry the unconscious Superboy back to Titans Tower. The rest of the team were waiting on the island when Aqualad, Beast Boy, and Kid Flash made it to the shore. Aqualad directed the swirling water to place Superboy on dry ground before relinquishing control of the tides.
“Guess I missed the real action, huh?” he said to Gar as he returned to his usual human shape.
“Glad you made it to the after party, though!” said Beast Boy. “You really came through for Conner.”
Red Robin knelt next to Superboy, doing a quick check of his vitals. “He’s breathing… good pulse… Probably just knocked out by the force of the blast. Let’s get him inside where we can keep an eye on him.”
Wonder Girl lifted Superboy in her arms and carried him into the tower, followed by Red Robin, Miss Martian, and Starfire.
On the shore, Aqualad sat between Beast Boy and Kid Flash. “What happened?”
Beast Boy filled him in on the events of the day. “Red Volcano showed up out of nowhere and began attacking the tower. Even when it looked like the Titans had beaten the super-powered android, it really only triggered a self-destruct mechanism that could have wiped out everything within a few miles. Bart was able to freeze Volcano using some of Captain Cold’s weaponry from the future, but Conner still had to get the ice block as far away from the city as possible. And that’s where you came in.”
“None of this makes sense, though,” Kid Flash said, lost in thought. “Why would Red Volcano attack the Teen Titans? It was unprovoked, right?”
Beast Boy shrugged his shoulders. “The last Red we dealt with was Tornado, and that’s just because we were teamed up with the Justice League last month. And he’s one of the good ones. As far as I’m aware, no one has heard anything out of Tornado’s ‘siblings’ in over a year. T. O. Morrow has been quiet.”
“Morrow…” Kid Flash trailed off, again lost in his thoughts. “Morrow would want to watch the action. He would want to see his handiwork. Especially if he was testing Volcano’s powers and limitations.”
“Then he should be close by,” suggested Aqualad.
“Bart,” said Beast Boy, getting to his feet, “do a quick sw-“
“On it!” shouted Kid Flash as he began running back and forth across the island, then extending his search to Golden Gate Park. “Got him!” he said over his communicator.
“That was quick,” Aqualad said. “Where are you?”
“In the park.”
Aqualad dove into the bay, swimming toward the park. Beast Boy transformed into a hawk and flew as fast as he could. When they both arrived at Bart’s location, they saw him running in circles around Morrow, keeping him from escaping.
Kid Flash came to a stop and Aqualad used water to bind the mad scientist. Beast Boy approached Morrow and transformed into a kangaroo.
“Really, Gar?” Kid Flash asked, “A kangaroo?”
Beast Boy nodded. “They can throw a hell of a punch.” With that, Gar landed a couple of punches then swept Morrow of his feet with his tail. “That’s for nearly destroying half the city!”
Aqualad couldn’t help but laugh at the sight of a green kangaroo beating up a helpless old man. “Come on. Let’s get this loser back to the tower so we can turn him over to the authorities.”
These characters are not my own. The Teen Titans and all related characters are the property of DC Comics. This is a work of fan fiction and is just for fun. Please don’t sue me.
