91 – Rififi

Welcome to The Best Movies I’ve Never Seen! This is the part of the blog where I work my way through 100 films I’ve never seen that are generally considered to be great. You’re invited to watch along with me if you can find a copy or find it streaming. So grab some popcorn and let’s get started!

Rififi

1955

Directed by Jules Dassin

Quick synopsis… Director Jean-Pierre Melville created one of cinema’s greatest heist films with this tense tale about a daring jewel robbery carried out by four veteran thieves. After the gang pulls off the job, however, the plan starts coming apart at the seams.

  • Confused yet? Me too…
  • If you’re paying attention to the introduction and synopsis up there, you’ll assume that this movie had two directors.
  • Or is Aaron getting his information from two different sources?
  • I looked it up, y’all…
  • Apparently, Rififi was originally going to be directed by Melville.
  • However, Dassin had asked for Melville’s permission to sit in the director’s chair.
  • In fact, this was Dassin’s first film in five years after he had been blacklisted in Hollywood thanks to being accused of being a communist.
  • Ah, the McCarthy era.
  • As heist movies go, I guess this one has just about everything.
  • Of course, there’s the jewel heist… but there’s also murder, kidnapping, domestic violence…
  • And it’s in French… so as an American who speaks only English, I had my usual issue of trying to pay closer attention.
  • It’s not bad… but if I’m in the mood for a heist flick, I’ll likely stick to Ocean’s Eleven or Ant-Man.
  • Having now seen Rififi, it currently ranks at 1,775 out of 2,247 movies on my personal Flickchart list.

Have you seen Rififi? If so, what did you think of it? It’s not an easy film to find, since it isn’t streaming on any of the traditional platforms. I wound up getting the DVD from Netflix. Next week’s movie, Spotlight, is a little more current and deals with some real world events.
