Houseplant

Because today is Houseplant Appreciation Day, our Sunday Scribblings prompt for this week is Houseplant. If you decide to write a post based on this week’s prompt, be sure to go back here and share your link so everyone can see how you interpreted things! Here’s what I did with it…

I have zero houseplants in my apartment. Though, I suppose they would be apartmentplants since I live in an apartment instead of a house. Right?

Anyway… no succulents, no ferns, no cacti, no ficuses (fici?)… None of the above. Or any other type of houseplant one could think of. I knew a guy who had a small lemon tree in his house. But I think it was just until it would be big enough to plant in his yard.

I’m sure that having a few houseplants sitting and/or hanging around the apartment would be nice and add to the atmosphere of the joint. I just don’t have a good track record with keeping things alive.

That sounded bad… I’ve had pets before. But the thing is, dogs… cats… they will let you know when they’re hungry or thirsty or need to go outside. Plants don’t come to you and whine when they need to be watered. They just start wilting like it’s a silent protest against the way you happen to run things inside your own home.

Another issue for me is sunlight. This is gonna sound like I’m some kind of vampire, but whatever. It’s not that I don’t enjoy the natural light provided by the sun. It’s just that I don’t like the added heat that comes with it whenever I leave my blinds open. When that happens, I have to spend more money on the electric bill because the A/C inevitably kicks on because of the sun. So I like to leave the blinds closed. I know that wouldn’t go over well with lifeforms that rely on sunlight to survive.

That’s right, I know a thing or two about photosynthesis.

So I have no houseplants.

But thinking of houseplants also reminds me of a song I used to really like back in the day. Anyone out there a fan of the Christian rock group Audio Adrenaline? I was during my college years. I don’t think they had any big crossover mainstream hits like Mercy Me did with “I Can Only Imagine.” But, on their Underdog album (not the movie based on the old cartoon), there was an acoustic number at the end of the playlist called “The Houseplant Song.” Give it a listen… it’s kind of fun.

Thanks to everyone who participated this week and shared your links! Please visit their blogs, give them a follow, and take a look at how they interpreted the prompt.

Be sure to come back on Wednesday for the next Sunday Scribblings prompt! Encourage other bloggers to challenge themselves with the prompt! Remember that there are no rules for what you write, other than responding to the prompt! You can write fiction, non-fiction, poetry, prose, biography, instruction… it’s all up to you!
