This week, our Sunday Scribblings prompt is Expectation. If you decide to write a post based on this week’s prompt, be sure to go back here and share your link so everyone can see how you interpreted things! Here’s what I did with it…
No fiction today… I guess I’m just not feeling it. No inspiration to speak of… But I will write a little about what I think about the word expectation.
At some point, earlier this year, I realized that I had posted something to this blog at least once per day since January 1. Throughout lock down, I figured there was no excuse not to continue posting something every day. Thus, here we are, approaching October, and I’ve still managed to post something to the blog every day.
This is an expectation that I have placed upon myself.
It certainly helps that I have a basic schedule for what gets posted when:
- Monday – Movie post
- Tuesday – Buffy and/or Angel rewatch post
- Wednesday – Sunday Scribblings prompt announcement
- Thursday – Random post
- Friday – Usually short fiction, sometimes random post
- Saturday – Question of the Week
- Sunday – My Sunday Scribblings response
Honestly, I don’t really know what you, the reader, might expect from me as far as this blog goes. I know I can take a look at the analytics provided by WordPress and get an idea of how popular certain posts are. But I’ve never been one who set out to blog for anyone other than myself.
The expectation I have with this blog is just that it’s a space where I can show up and write whatever I feel like writing whenever I feel like writing it. I have certainly evolved as a blogger over the course of more than 15 years now. Back in the day, most of my content consisted of vent sessions over how much I hated my job. That’s not who I am anymore… I’m sure being content in the workplace has diminished my ability to spew abrasive sarcasm… but maybe that’s a good thing.
Maybe the average reader doesn’t care about what my favorite movies are. Maybe the average reader doesn’t care what I think about old episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel. But that’s okay. I appreciate that people stop by anyway.
I’m certain that I have some followers who click over here and hit that like button just to be polite. I appreciate that, too.
If I were allowed to ask one thing, it would be that more people made comments. That’s mostly because I want to be able to interact more with the people who read my posts. But the flip side of that is that I don’t always have time to respond to a comment when I get a notification on my phone and then when I have time later, there’s a good chance I’ve forgotten to say something.
So I’m gonna ask… Do you have expectations of me as a writer? I know what my own expectations are of myself, and now so do you. But I’d like to know yours. So let me know in the comments!
Thanks to everyone who participated this week and shared your links! Please visit their blogs, give them a follow, and take a look at how they interpreted the prompt.
Be sure to come back on Wednesday for the next Sunday Scribblings prompt! Encourage other bloggers to challenge themselves with the prompt!
