Rewatching Angel – Episode 23

Angel - TitleWelcome to Rewatching Angel, the part of the blog where I rewatch the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off: Angel. Each Tuesday evening, you’re invited to join me as I attempt to rediscover what made me love these shows so many years ago.

Judgement

  • Welcome to season two…
  • And to welcome us, we get a green skinned demon with frosted tips singing karaoke and giving a little exposition about the dark side of LA.
  • Cordelia’s in an acting class. Wesley is hustling some dart players at a pub.
  • They both get a page from Angel.
  • This is so late ’90s… Remember beepers?
  • Anyway, they storm a gym where some kind of demon sacrifice appears to be going down.
  • The good guys manage to slay two demons and free their three victims.
  • After the destruction of their office, Team Angel is still using Cordelia’s apartment as a base of operations.
  • And they’re still trying to figure out what Wolfram & Hart raised at the end of last season.
  • Cordelia has a vision of a nasty looking demon of unknown origin. That should narrow it down.
  • Lilah goes to Lindsey’s office. He’s having a hard time getting used to his prosthetic hand.
  • Darla likes it dark and she likes listening to classical music. Unless it’s by a Russian composer.
  • She’s remembering things. Like how Angel killed her. She wants to see him.
  • In looking for leads on the demon from Cordelia’s vision, Wes takes them to a safe haven for demons to meet a parasite demon named Merl.
  • It’s the karaoke bar from the start of the episode.
  • The green demon is the Host of the bar and he can psychically read people/demons as they sing.
  • Merl gives some info about the demon they’re looking for. As they go out to hunt, the Host stops them.
  • He tries to convince Angel to sing, but Angel refuses.
  • In the tunnels where the demon is said to be, Angel runs into a pregnant woman.
  • He snaps the demon’s neck, but it turns out the demon was actually protecting the woman and her unborn child.
  • Angel feels awful and tries to understand what just happened, but the woman tells him to stay away from her.
  • She said the demon was protecting her from the Tribunal. So now Angel wants to protect her from the Tribunal.
  • Angel finds Merl again and threatens him until he spills more info.
  • In another part of town, Gunn saves a guy from a vampire, staking the vamp in the process.
  • Gunn helps Angel find the dead demon’s home. They find some kind of medallion and Angel sends Gunn to Wes and Cordelia to try and find out what its meaning is.
  • Angel stays in the lair and, as luck would have it, the pregnant woman shows up.
  • She agrees to let him help her. And she says they need to find the coat of arms.
  • Which is the thing that Angel gave to Gunn.
  • Angrily, she tries to leave and tells Angel to stop helping. But as she leaves, she’s attacked by something super ugly.
  • Angel fights and manages to kill the demon, not feeling bad about it this time.
  • Gunn delivers the coat of arms to Wesley and Cordelia, finally getting a proper introduction.
  • Angel and the woman hide out in an abandoned hotel.
  • He sends her to Cordelia’s, but she never goes there. Angel decides the only way to figure out how to find the woman and the Tribunal is to return to the karaoke bar and let the Host read his aura.
  • He “sings” Barry Manilow’s “Mandy”. And it’s awful.
  • Before the Host tells Angel where the woman and the Tribunal will be, he asks, “Why Mandy?”
  • Angel knew the words. And he thinks it’s pretty.
  • The Tribunal rises and a knight on horseback rides up.
  • Not a regular knight. A demon knight.
  • The Tribunal informs her that, since she has no champion and no coat of arms, her life is forfeit.
  • Then Angel arrives. He throws in the coat of arms and informs the Tribunal that she does have a champion.
  • Angel has to face the demon knight in trial by combat.
  • It’s a joust.
  • Angel is unhorsed, and then it becomes a sword fight. Well, sword against mace.
  • But Angel’s pretty good with a sword.
  • When it looks like Angel’s lost, he gets back up and beheads the demon knight.
  • The woman and her baby are under the Tribunal’s protection from then on.
  • Angel goes to visit Faith in prison. It’s kind of touching.
  • Body count: Demons – 5; Vampires – 1
