Welcome to Rewatching Buffy, the part of the blog where I rewatch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Each Tuesday evening, you’re invited to join me as I attempt to rediscover what made me love this show 21 years ago.
Where the Wild Things Are
- We begin with Buffy and Riley fighting a vampire and a demon in a cemetery.
- Riley dusts the vampire, Buffy kills the demon.
- They talk about going to Giles to fill him in on the vampire/demon tag team.
- Instead they wind up in Riley’s room.
- Kids these days. Always thinking with the hormones.
- Riley gets up in the middle of the night and hears strange sounds. Investigating the bathroom, he pulls back the shower curtain like he’s in a horror movie. Of course, nothing’s there.
- Xander’s working as an ice cream truck driver this week. And Anya’s riding along with him.
- Somehow, I don’t think you’re supposed to give rides to your girlfriend if you’re driving an ice cream truck.
- They begin loudly arguing about their sex life until Xander realizes he has many customers, most of whom are children.
- I assume this is how Xander lost his job as an ice cream truck driver.
- Giles meets with Buffy, Riley, Willow, and Tara to discuss the demon/vamp tag team.
- They come to the conclusion that this is happening because Adam is bringing the bad guys together.
- Before we go further, just know that this is mostly the sex episode.
- Buffy and Riley are pretty much going at it non-stop.
- Riley’s house is haunted by something that’s either making them insatiable or is being provoked by their constant lust. I can’t remember which.
- Maybe it’s both.
- And I’m sure it helps that there’s a big party at Riley’s house.
- While most of the Scooby Gang parties, Anya is randomly hanging out with Spike at the Bronze. They’re an odd match.
- But it kinda makes sense… ex-demon and a neutered vampire…
- Eventually, whatever’s in the house begins affecting more than just Buffy and Riley.
- There’s a spot on the wall that causes extreme pleasure. Games of spin the bottle are getting out of hand. And then there’s some insane guilt/penance in the aftermath for some of the party-goers.
- Willow hears a noise in the bathroom. Probably the same thing Riley heard the night before.
- But when she pulls back the curtain, she sees a kid drowning in the tub.
- Suddenly the kid is gone… and then he’s right behind her!
- As things get out of hand, the sidekicks call out for Buffy. But she and Riley are literally in a world of their own. Supernaturally separated from the rest of the house.
- The gang goes to find Giles.
- He’s performing an acoustic set at the Espresso Pump.
- He’s pretty good. There should be a musical episode…
- Turns out the house is haunted by a whole mess of poltergeists.
- The building was once an orphanage. It’s haunted now by the kids who were, in life, forced to repress sexual desires. And they’re feeding on Buffy and Riley.
- Xander and Anya manage to fight back through the poltergeist house to break into Riley’s room, breaking the spell over him and Buffy.
- I hope we all learned a lesson here.
