Rewatching Angel – Episode 18

Angel - TitleWelcome to Rewatching Angel, the part of the blog where I rewatch the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off: Angel. Each Tuesday evening, you’re invited to join me as I attempt to rediscover what made me love these shows so many years ago.

Five by Five

  • With a title like Five by Five, I think it’s safe to assume that Faith’s gonna make an appearance.
  • That and the recap at the start of the show reminds us all about who Faith is.
  • A gang member comes across a trio of demons. Angel shows up and saves him, killing the trio. Guess they were part of a vision.
  • Faith arrives at a bus station in LA and she’s approached by a sleazy guy who is normally a predator when talking to young girls.
  • Faith easily beats the crap out of him, stealing his wallet, his keys, and his jacket.
  • I can’t tell if Faith killed the dude. There’s easy confirmation from just watching her kick his butt. I’m going benefit of the doubt and say he’s just knocked out and in need of a decent hospital stay.
  • We’re treated to a flashback. Angelus and Darla spending some time in Romania.
  • Darla has a little gift for Angelus’ birthday: a young Gypsy girl.
  • This begs the question, why was Angelus the only one cursed with a soul?
  • Darla is the one who kidnapped the girl from the tribe that cursed Angel. Just because Angelus is the one who did the actual killing, he’s the only one who gets punished. He never would have killed her if Darla hadn’t grabbed her first.
  • Checking in on Faith, she’s dancing pretty violently at a club.
  • The gang member that Angel saved? Turns out he’s an important witness in a case against a scumbag being defended by Wolfram & Hart.
  • Lindsey, the lawyer from the pilot episode, takes responsibility and needs to find a way to take down Angel.
  • Another staffer at Wolfram & Hart hears that the rogue Slayer is in town. And Lilah knows where to find her.
  • They pick Faith up in a limo, wooing her like they would an important client.
  • In our next flashback, it’s after Angel’s soul has been restored. Darla is deeply disturbed by this turn of events.
  • She halfheartedly tries to stake him, then kicks him out to wander the streets alone.
  • Faith meets with the trio of attorneys. Lindsey mentions that they want her to kill Angel and she says no problem.
  • Team Angel goes to meet with a potential client for lunch. And that’s where Faith shows up.
  • When she attacks, they’re all pretty shocked that she’s up and about. They thought she was still in a coma.
  • Why didn’t Team Buffy inform Team Angel that she was awake?
  • In discussing how they should respond to Faith’s sudden appearance in LA, Wes tries to convince Angel that she can be reasoned with.
  • Angel and Faith have another encounter at his office after he orders Wes and Cordelia to make themselves scarce.
  • It doesn’t go well. But both walk away fairly unscathed.
  • Angel decides to infiltrate the law offices of Wolfram & Hart.
  • He snoops around Lindsey’s office and then has a nice conversation with Lindsey when he arrives back at his office.
  • Wes and Cordelia get back to her place after doing some research and Cordelia’s phantom roommate won’t let her in the apartment.
  • She convinces Dennis to let them in. Turns out Faith is already inside.
  • Wes tries to reason with her. Her response is to knock out Cordelia and abduct Wesley.
  • Back in the past, Angel is roaming the streets of Romania. Tortured and hungry. He breaks down and feeds on a woman.
  • Angel arrives at Cordelia’s apartment and learns what happened.
  • Wesley, meanwhile, has been bound and gagged. Faith intends to torture him pretty severely.
  • Angel tracks Faith down to the apartment where she’s hiding out.
  • Why is he able to kick down the door and just stroll in? Uninvited…
  • Because I’m pretty sure this apartment belongs to the guy that Faith beat up at the bus station. And Cordelia confirmed that he’s in the hospital. Alive.
  • It really bothers me when TV shows make little mistakes like that.
  • Oh… another flashback… turns out he didn’t kill that woman. Just fed a little…
  • Back in the present, an epic fight ensues.
  • And somewhere along the way, Faith has a pretty sever emotional breakdown.
  • The horrible things she’s done have caught up to her and the guilt is overwhelming.
  • Angel realizes that, in this fight, Faith is hoping that Angel will kill her, just so she won’t have to feel the guilt anymore.
  • He refuses to make it that easy for her.
  • Body count: Demons – 3

    • I wish I had some good recommendations for TV. There are definitely a few shows I watch that I don’t like to miss, but none are the same quality of shows like Buffy or Angel, or even others from back in the day. Maybe I’m looking back through a fog of nostalgia. But I kinda feel like even the shows I really like today are disappointing in a lot of ways: sloppy writing, cheesy dialogue, plot holes… They just don’t make ‘em like they used to.
