Rewatching Buffy – Episode 69

buffy-titleWelcome to Rewatching Buffy, the part of the blog where I rewatch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Each Tuesday evening, you’re invited to join me as I attempt to rediscover what made me love this show 21 years ago.

The I in Team

  • Willow, Xander, and Anya are having a poker night in Xander’s basement. And since Anya’s involved, it’s always awkward.
  • They still aren’t sure about Buffy’s involvement with Riley, in a sense that they still don’t trust the Initiative.
  • Cut to Buffy training with a team of commandos. Walsh is impressed.
  • Well… to her face she’s impressed. Off to the side, though, she’s kind of giving her some hard side eye.
  • Buffy and Willow trade notes about each other’s evening. They miss hanging out with each other.
  • Giles goes to visit Spike in his new crypt. He’s paying him for his help last week when he was transformed into a temporary demon.
  • Giles tries to look at Spike’s condition as something for the greater good. Spike shuts that idea way down.
  • Riley gives Buffy full access to the Initiative. She’s got her own retinal scan and everything.
  • I noticed they didn’t have to do a voice print ID. That was kind of a big deal during Hush. Guess they got rid of it in case everyone loses their voices again.
  • Once they get into the base, Walsh kind of makes it clear she’s just a visitor.
  • She gives Buffy the tour and introduces her to Dr. Angleman, who’s been most responsible for demon behavior modification. AKA – Spike’s chip.
  • She’s a visitor, but Buffy still gets her own ID card and pager.
  • Walsh heads back to 314 again. Angleman is there working on something.
  • We see that something and Walsh calls it Adam.
  • Adam looks to be some sort of human/demon/cyborg hybrid. I’m sure that’s going to work out well for everyone.
  • Buffy arrives at The Bronze with Riley and a bunch of Initiative guys. Willow’s kind of hurt by the unexpected guests.
  • Willow continues to express concern about getting involved with the Initiative. She brings up a good point: What’s their ultimate agenda?
  • Buffy and all the guys suddenly get paged. They’re briefed on a certain type of demon that they’re after.
  • This particular demon has bone skewers that shoot out of its arms. Angleman says it’s imperative that the arms are not damaged. They want to capture these things, not kill them.
  • Buffy asks a lot of questions… which annoys Walsh and Angleman.
  • Since the Scooby Gang’s night at The Bronze was interrupted, Willow decides to hang out with Tara.
  • Forrest is jealous that Riley picked Buffy to be his second in command for this opp… but then they track down Spike as a nice little bonus.
  • They tag him and are able to track him.
  • Meanwhile, Buffy and Team Riley are able to capture the bone skewer demon.
  • Then they go back to Riley’s room and have sex
  • …And Walsh watches on surveillance. Yeah… that’s not creepy at all, professor.
  • The next morning, Spike barges into Giles’ place and asks for help… even though he told Giles he wanted nothing else to do with the good guys.
  • But he needs to get rid of the tracker. So he gives Giles back all the money he has left from what he was paid.
  • Buffy finds out that Riley has to take special “vitamins” each morning. I smell no good.
  • She then asks him what 314 is… but before he can answer, Riley’s phone rings. It’s Walsh.
  • How much you wanna bet she called because Buffy was asking too many questions. Again.
  • Walsh sends Riley after Hostile 17 (Spike).
  • In the meantime, Walsh and Angleman discuss how to eliminate the Slayer. “It’s too bad. She could have been a powerful ally.”
  • Oh, and while they talk, Angleman is removing one of the skewer demon’s arms. Probably to add it to Adam’s hodgepodge of parts.
  • Giles works to remove the tracker.
  • Buffy and Willow get to their room, both having been out all night.
  • Buffy is paged away and Willow gets a call from Giles.
  • Walsh sends Buffy to take down a low-level threat. “Could be a raccoon.”
  • She expresses concern about still not being clear on everything Initiative-wise, so Walsh says they can talk when they get back.
  • Willow heads to Giles’ place to perform a spell that should mask the signal from the tracker.
  • The commandos suddenly can’t find the signal.
  • Buffy, in the sewers, encounters her “low level” threat. Definitely not a raccoon.
  • In fact, the threat is a pair of demons that she saw Angleman operating on during her grand tour. These things are supposed to be under Initiative control.
  • Oh, and the weapon that Buffy was given? It’s faulty.
  • Judging by the camera/heart rate monitor that Buffy’s wearing, the demons win.
  • But we know better than that. Buffy’s camera/monitor just fell off in the scuffle.
  • Buffy manages to kill both demons.
  • Meanwhile, Giles manages to get the tracker out of Spike. And he flushes it.
  • When Riley gets back to base, Walsh breaks the news to him that Buffy is dead.
  • But then, over Walsh’s shoulder, Buffy shows up on the screen.
  • “If you think that’s enough to kill me, you really don’t know what a Slayer is. Trust me when I say you’re gonna find out.”
  • Riley walks away from Walsh. He’s pissed. Buffy’s pissed. Walsh is screwed.
  • Giles tries to tell Spike that it’s foolish for him to stay in Sunnydale. As long as the Initiative is around, he’s not safe.
  • Buffy walks in and says that none of them are safe.
  • Later, Walsh is venting about Buffy to an unconscious Adam. Or so she thinks.
  • Out of nowhere, Walsh is turned into a kabob by one of Adam’s new arm skewers.
  • Adam is fully operational.
  • Body count: Humans – 1; Demons – 2
