Rewatching Buffy – Episode 68

buffy-titleWelcome to Rewatching Buffy, the part of the blog where I rewatch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Each Tuesday evening, you’re invited to join me as I attempt to rediscover what made me love this show 21 years ago.

A New Man

  • Buffy and Riley seem to have… ahem… moved past the awkward phase of knowing the truth about each other.
  • If you know what I mean…
  • And then Willow comes in. There’s trouble. Something that breathes fire.
  • Psych! It’s a surprise birthday party for Buffy.
  • Is this a good idea? Buffy doesn’t have the best track record for birthdays.
  • Let’s recap, shall we?
  • On Buffy’s 17th birthday, she and Angel slept together, which caused Angel to lose his soul and revert to the uber-evil Angelus.
  • On Buffy’s 18th birthday, the Watcher’s Council put her through a nightmarish test in which they took away her Slayer powers, after which Giles was fired as her Watcher.
  • What fresh hell will 19 cook up?
  • Giles is there with all the kids. He doesn’t seem to be having a great time at the party.
  • Buffy introduces Riley to Giles. Riley asks if he’s retired. Way to make the old guy feel old.
  • And then Buffy starts going on about Professor Walsh… “She’s absolutely the smartest person I’ve ever met.”
  • Not the greatest thing to say to someone whose job is to be pretty much the smartest guy in the room.
  • Xander finally kicks Spike out of his basement. He’s moving into a crypt.
  • Buffy meets with Walsh. She, too, believed the Slayer was a myth.
  • Walsh is working on getting Buffy clearance for the Initiative, believing there’s a lot they can learn from each other.
  • Walsh brags that Riley has killed or captured 17 hostiles. Then she asks Buffy about her number. Ha!
  • Meanwhile, Giles is doing some light reading and discovers that something is about to rise.
  • Giles stops in to visit Walsh. She’s really condescending toward him. Going so far as to claim she thinks that Buffy lacks a decent father figure in her life.
  • Ouch.
  • Giles takes Willow and Xander to take care of this demon that’s supposed to rise.
  • Willow thinks that the Initiative must have taken care of it before it could happen.
  • This is the first Giles has heard that the commandos are called the Initiative and that Riley is one of them.
  • Giles is hurt. Suffering from FOMO, I’d bet. He sends Xander and Willow away, then he packs up and leaves.
  • And then Ethan Rayne steps out of the shadows and begins monologuing, as idiot villains are want to do. Of course, Giles is still within earshot and walks back into the crypt and catches him.
  • Ethan supposedly has information about something bad that’s coming. Something bad for both of them.
  • They go out for drinks and he talks about hearing whispers in demon circles about something called 314. Demons are more scared of this than they are of the Slayer.
  • Buffy and Riley are sparring. They dare each other to go all out. Buffy kicks his butt.
  • Several drinks in, Giles is pretty drunk. But he’s still managed to come to the conclusion that Ethan was talking about the Initiative.
  • The next morning, Giles wakes up with a heck of a hangover. And he’s also a demon.
  • Whatever he is, he’s super strong. And he’s pretty sure this is Ethan’s fault.
  • Of course it’s Ethan’s fault.
  • Demon Giles goes to Xander. He wakes him up and tries to explain what’s happened to him.
  • But all Xander hears is some demon gibberish. So he throws heavy objects at him to get him to leave.
  • Xander tells the gang about the demon that visited his basement. They go to Giles and find the door ripped off the hinges and Giles is gone.
  • Demon Giles is walking through a cemetery and runs into Spike. Who can understand the demon language he’s speaking.
  • Spike agrees to help him find Ethan. For $200.
  • Driving around, Giles feels like he’s changing. It’s a mindless need to destroy.
  • He spots Walsh on the street and, for a laugh, has Spike stop the car so he can scare her.
  • The Scooby Gang figure out that the demon they’re looking for is a Fyarl demon. It can be killed with something made of silver.
  • Thinking that someone is controlling this demon with magic, Buffy heads to the magic shop to see if there’s evidence of who could be doing it.
  • She finds a credit card receipt with Ethan’s name on it. Riley phones in a search.
  • Then he breaks the news that he was given specific orders not to bring Buffy along.
  • Because she’s good at following orders.
  • This demon has done something to Giles, so she wants to kill it dead.
  • Giles breaks into Ethan’s hotel room just before Buffy and Riley arrive.
  • Ethan tells her that the demon killed Giles and how it’s after him, too.
  • So she fights Giles and has Riley keep Ethan from leaving.
  • Just as Buffy’s about to kill Giles, she realizes who he is because of his eyes.
  • Ethan reverses the spell and Giles is back to normal.
  • And this time, Ethan doesn’t just get away. Riley has him arrested.
  • The next day, Giles expresses concern about the Initiative. Buffy needs to keep her eyes open.
  • Walsh tells Riley that she can’t trust Buffy because she acts on instinct and is undisciplined.
  • And then she heads into a restricted area and a door labeled 314.
  • Body count: Everybody lived!
