Rewatching Buffy – Episode 50

buffy-titleWelcome to Rewatching Buffy, the part of the blog where I rewatch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Each Tuesday evening, you’re invited to join me as I attempt to rediscover what made me love this show 20 years ago.

  • Remember that time Cordelia wished that Buffy had never come to Sunnydale, and then it created a new reality? That’s important for this episode.
  • Because we open on Anyanka, the one-demon Make a Wish Foundation. She’s trying to get her powers back. She hates stuck as a senior in high school.
  • She’s been denied.
  • Willow can make a pencil float… and spin in the air… neat.
  • Principal Snyder wants Willow to tutor Percy, the school’s star basketball player, who is flunking pretty much all the things.
  • Faith and Buffy are being forced through some evaluations as a further consequence of the killing of a human being.
  • Oh, and, just a reminder, Faith is a bad guy now. She shares with the mayor that Willow is trying to hack his files. Pretty sure he now wants her dead.
  • Percy, the basketball guy, is under the impression that being tutored by Willow means that she’s just gonna do all his work for him.
  • In case you’re missing it, Willow is kind of being stepped all over in this episode.
  • Anya seeks Willow out for help… probably with the thing where she wants her power back. She needs help with a spell.
  • The spell is supposed to bring Anya’s necklace that was destroyed in the alternate reality.
  • Instead, it brings the alternate Willow into this reality. She’s the Vampire Willow
  • So… now there are two Willows. I’ll refer to regular Willow as Willow. I’ll refer to Vampire Willow as Vampire Willow.
  • Clear as mud?
  • Vampire Willow is confused as she walks through Sunnydale. She’s not sure why so many humans are walking around after dark. Remember, in her reality, the vampires had taken over.
  • Vampire Willow finds her way to The Bronze. One presumes she’s on the hunt.
  • She finds Percy, who tries to order her to finish his report for him. So she kind of beats the crap out of him.
  • Xander pulls Percy out of Vampire Willow’s grasp, thinking that he’s coming to her rescue.
  • I don’t think Percy will be giving the real Willow a hard time anymore.
  • Buffy arrives… All parties are confused.
  • Until Vampire Willow reveals that she’s a vampire. Obviously, this devastates Buffy and Xander.
  • Vampire Willow is attacked by the mayor’s vampire flunkies, who were sent after Willow. She hands their butts to them. Now they’re Vampire Willow’s vampire flunkies.
  • Buffy and Xander fill Giles in on Vampire Willow being a vampire.
  • Willow shows up at the library and is unaffected by Xander’s cross. Everyone is relieved. But confused.
  • Vampire Willow and her posse take over The Bronze. Anya recognizes Vampire Willow from the alternate reality.
  • Oz sends Angel to get Buffy.
  • Vampire Willow chooses a girl to feed on. And she’s dead…
  • Anya explains to Vampire Willow that Oz is talking to her as if they’re friends because he thinks she’s the Willow from this reality. Anya wants to help Vampire Willow get back to her world.
  • Angel gets the gang. Willow hangs back in the library, and Vampire Willow grabs her.
  • She talks like she wants to turn Willow into a vampire. Willow manages to shoot Vampire Willow with the tranq gun, knocking her out.
  • Buffy suggests having Vampire Willow and Willow switch clothes.
  • Willow goes into The Bronze, posing as Vampire Willow. But she’s a little too chipper. And claims she killed Willow.
  • She sends a vampire outside, and he’s handily staked by Buffy. Then she sends out another…
  • Meanwhile, Vampire Willow wakes up in the book cage at the library. And in walks Cordelia.
  • She tries to get Cordelia to let her out. Then Cordelia decides that, since she’s in there, now is a good opportunity to talk about all that stuff that happened with Xander earlier in the season.
  • Back at The Bronze, Anya figures out that Willow isn’t Vampire Willow.
  • Eventually, Cordelia does unlock the book cage and Vampire Willow kills her easily.
  • Just kidding. Cordelia manages to run away. And Wesley manages to fend Vampire Willow off with a cross and some holy water.
  • At The Bronze, the good guys bust in and a fight ensues. They manage to dust two of them.
  • Just as Buffy is about to kill Vampire Willow, real Willow stops her.
  • With Anya’s help, the good guys send Vampire Willow back to her reality.
  • …Just in time to be dusted by Oz.
  • Body count: Humans – 1; Vampires – 5
