When did you last sing to yourself? to someone else?
The answer to the first part of this question is always a few minutes ago. ‘Cause I’m constantly singing to myself. Sometimes it’s something from a Disney movie. Sometimes it’s Jason Mraz. Sometimes it’s a random praise song that was popular when I was involved with the BSU in college. Sometimes it’s “All About That Bass”. You just never know with me.
As for the second part of the question, are we exclusively talking about serenades? Or do we count karaoke? Or do we count the time I forgot I wasn’t alone in the house and began singing in the shower? Really, I don’t know. It’s been a very long time since I genuinely serenaded anyone. And when I say serenade, I mean I’m singing a song to a girl with the actual intention of trying to impress her with my angelic singing voice. I did sing at my cousin’s wedding last summer, meaning that I did sing to a whole mess of people sitting in the hot Nashville sun. I did call a girl once and sang “You Are My Sunshine” to her. But I was a kid, so I’m sure I’ve sung to someone since then. And that’s not really the song you want to sing when trying to impress a girl. Seriously, look up the lyrics for that song. It’s kind of depressing.

I’m not known for spreading Christmas cheer, but I do sing to the baby fairly often while we dance. (Ok, I dance, he goes along for the ride and laughs hysterically when I dip him.) Singing full out rarely ever happens in front of others though, but I sing to myself a bunch.
Sorry if you weren’t looking for audience participation here.

I hum a lot. My family finds it annoying. I don’t even know I’m doing it. And it isn’t random humming. It’s a Journey song, or Adele, or Led Zeppelin. And I sing along to songs if there is no one near. I have a new co-worker who breaks into song a lot. A lot. It’s a sign of her happiness but I’m trying not to tell her it’s irksome to me. The one song that I continue to sing to my family when I serve cooked chicken, and it stopped being funny to them 20 years ago, is “Take, this broken wing…”
