“I am going to absolutely CRUSH this role!” declared Alex, bursting through the front door waving a sheet of paper. “Mrs. Larkin gave me the lead part in the Christmas pageant this year! Can you believe it? The LEAD!”
“Indoor voice, honey,” said his mom, wiping flour-covered hands on her apron. The smell of gingerbread filled the kitchen.
“Sorry mom, I’m just so excited! This is my chance to really transcend my usual roles and show my full acting potential. No more playing Shepherd #2 or Background Angel for me. This year, I’m Joseph!”
“Joseph, wow! Well I’m proud of you dear. I’m sure you’ll do a great job.”
Alex’s little sister Sophie came bounding in. “Did I hear something about the Christmas pageant? I’m going to be a sheep again, baa!” She giggled.
“Guess what Soph? I got the lead role of Joseph. Pretty impressive, huh?” Alex puffed out his chest.
“Ooh, lah-dee-dah,” Sophie teased. “Mr. Big Shot Actor now are we? Well I happen to think being a sheep is the most important role. The sheep are the unsung heroes of the nativity!”
Their father Tim arrived home, stamping snow off his boots. “Evening, family! Mmm, smells good in here. What’s all the commotion about?”
“Dad! You’re looking at this year’s Joseph in the pageant!” Alex proclaimed.
“Hey, good for you son! You’ve worked hard, you deserve it,” said Tim, giving Alex a high five.
“Just wait until opening night. I’m going to blow away everyone’s expectations and deliver the most powerful, emotionally riveting portrayal of Joseph ever seen on the Pinewood Elementary stage!”
For the next week, Alex threw himself into rehearsals with gusto. He memorized every line, practiced dramatic faces in the mirror, and had his mom time his delivery.
Finally, the night of the pageant arrived. The auditorium was filled with proud parents clutching camcorders. Alex peeked through the curtains, took a deep breath, and waited for his cue.
The pageant proceeded smoothly at first. Mary and Joseph arrived in Bethlehem. The choir of angels sang. The wise men presented their gifts. And of course, Sophie and her fellow sheep baa-ed on cue.
But just as the grand finale manger scene approached, disaster struck! In his nervousness, Alex stepped on the corner of his robe, lost his balance, and toppled over right into the manger, sending the baby Jesus doll flying! He scrambled to catch it but tripped again, knocking over a papier-mâché cow. Gasps rang out from the audience.
Panicking, Alex tried desperately to set the manger scene right, but his efforts only made things worse as more and more props tumbled. His face burned with embarrassment. So much for transcendent Joseph – more like Calamity Joe! He wanted to run offstage and hide.
But then, Sophie came to the rescue. Still in full sheep costume, she waddled over and started helping him reassemble the manger.
“Looks like you could use a hand from this unsung sheep hero,” she whispered with a smile. “Take a deep breath. You’ve got this.”
Her encouragement snapped him out of his panic. Together, they got the set back in order. Alex took his place next to Mary, clearing his throat.
“Behold!” he projected in a voice that only shook a little. “The Son of God, lying in a manger. Let us give thanks for the greatest gift of all – the gift of hope and love.”
The audience cheered as the cast took their bows. On the car ride home, Sophie gloated, “I saved your butt out there, bro! I think this sheep deserves a promotion to Sheep #1 next year, don’t you?”
“Okay, okay, I admit it – the sheep are the real stars,” laughed Alex. “I guess I learned that you don’t need the lead role to make an impact. And that having a mischievous little sister isn’t so bad after all.”
“You both did great,” said their mom. “I think this calls for a celebration – who wants gingerbread?”
Laughter filled the car as they drove home through the softly falling snow, another memorable Christmas pageant happily concluded. Alex smiled, realizing that his most transcendent role was simply being a part of this quirky, loving family.
