Rewatching Smallville – Episode 18

Welcome back to Rewatching Smallville, my weekly dive into the iconic series that explores Clark Kent’s journey before becoming Superman. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the show, you’re invited to join in each Tuesday as I revisit episodes and share my thoughts and observations. This week, we’re diving into the 18th episode of the series, “Drone,” where the buzz is all about the race for class president and a certain bee-controlling meteor freak. Let’s get into it, shall we?

First things first, let’s address the vehicular chaos in this episode. Lex Luthor, our resident speed demon, manages to avoid an accident while zipping around in his silver Ferrari. However, he does have to stop to “help” a stranded journalist in a red Mustang (more on that later). That brings our total to one near-miss and one suspicious roadside encounter… but no actual accidents in this episode.

Now, onto the meat of the show. Clark finds himself nominated for class president by his overzealous buddy, Pete. Despite his initial reluctance, Clark decides to give it a shot, much to the delight of his parents and Lana. However, he quickly realizes that running for office isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, especially when you’ve got a swarm of angry bees on your tail.

Speaking of bees, let’s talk about Sasha Woodman, the episode’s resident meteor freak. After being attacked by bees last year in Shuster’s Gorge (a nice nod to Superman co-creator Joe Shuster), Sasha has apparently become the queen bee, controlling swarms to take out her competition in the election. It’s a bizarre power, but hey, this is Smallville, where anything can happen.

Meanwhile, Lex is dealing with his own problems in the form of Carrie Castle, a journalist who poses as his masseuse to get an interview. Lex, being the shrewd businessman he is, manages to turn the tables on her, offering her a job in exchange for burying the unflattering article. Just another day in the life of Lex Luthor.

Back to the election, Clark’s campaign hits a snag when Chloe, in a shocking display of journalistic integrity, endorses his opponent. This leads to a bit of tension between the friends, but they eventually patch things up just in time to take on Sasha and her bee army.

In the end, Paul Chan wins the election (despite being attacked by bees and unable to campaign), Lana saves the Talon by exposing the Beanery’s health code violations, and Clark realizes that popularity isn’t everything. Oh, and Sasha gets blown up in her bee shed, but don’t worry, I’m sure she’ll be fine…

Now, let’s talk about the importance of this episode in the grand scheme of Smallville. While it may seem like a standalone story, “Drone” does offer some interesting insights into our characters. We see Lex’s manipulative side as he deals with Carrie Castle, hinting at his future as a villain. We also see Clark learning valuable lessons about leadership and integrity, which will undoubtedly shape his path to becoming Superman.

Oh, and let’s not forget the fact that Carrie Castle just waltzes into the Luthor mansion posing as a masseuse. Seriously, does Lex not have any security? It seems like anyone can just stroll in there whenever they please. But I digress.

In conclusion, “Drone” may not be the most groundbreaking episode of Smallville, but it’s a fun, bee-filled romp that offers some character development and a few laughs along the way. Plus, it gave us the iconic line, “I’m not destined to be a politician. You need two different personalities.” Oh, Clark, if only you knew.

So, fellow Smallville fans, what did you think of “Drone”? Did you find the bee storyline a bit too bizarre? Did you catch all the references to The Godfather? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
