Welcome back, Smallville fans, to another thrilling installment of our favorite show about a young Clark Kent navigating the perils of high school, small-town life, and his burgeoning superpowers. In the 17th episode of Season One, titled “Reaper,” we’re treated to a story that delves into the complexities of life, death, and the consequences of wielding power over others.

The episode kicks off with a bang (or should I say a splat?) as Tyler Randall, a new character with a tragic backstory, helps his dying mother pass away by smothering her with a pillow. In a twist of fate, Tyler falls to his own death, only to be resurrected by a kryptonite fragment embedded in his wrist. With his newfound ability to turn people to ash with a single touch, Tyler sets out on a misguided mission to “help” others who are suffering.

Meanwhile, our favorite bald billionaire, Lex Luthor, is dealing with his own set of problems. Dominic Sanatori, an unwelcome auditor sent by Lex’s father, is snooping around the Luthor Mansion and prying into Lex’s investigations of the Kent family. In a move that showcases Lex’s growing ruthlessness, he drugs Sanatori and stuffs him in the trunk of his car. I guess that’s one way to handle a nosy employee.

Clark, on the other hand, is grappling with the challenges of growing up and asserting his independence. He’s outgrown his annual fishing trip with his dad and would rather attend a Metropolis Sharks game with tickets provided by Lex. This leads to a heated argument between Clark and Jonathan, highlighting the tension between the Kents and the Luthors.

As the episode progresses, Tyler’s misguided attempts to “help” people lead to a trail of ashen bodies, including Mrs. Sikes, her dog Pepper, and Hank, a Mobile Meals volunteer. Clark confronts Tyler and, in a rare moment of vulnerability, is nearly turned to ash himself. It’s a stark reminder that even with all his powers, Clark is not invincible.

The episode concludes with a touching moment as Lex arranges for the Metropolis Sharks to play a scrimmage for Whitney’s ailing father, with Whitney as their quarterback. It’s a heartwarming gesture that showcases the depth of Lex’s character and his capacity for kindness, despite his growing darkness.

“Reaper” is a significant episode in the Smallville lore, as it explores the themes of life, death, and the responsibility that comes with power. It also highlights the ongoing tension between Clark and Lex, foreshadowing their eventual roles as Superman and his nemesis. Plus, it’s always fun to see how many people just show up at the Luthor Mansion unannounced (I counted at least two in this episode).

Oh, and for those keeping score at home, there were zero vehicular accidents in this episode.

In the end, “Reaper” is a thought-provoking and entertaining episode that showcases the strengths of Smallville‘s writing and acting. It’s a grim tale, but one that’s well worth watching. So, fellow Smallville fans, what did you think of this episode? Did it leave you feeling a bit ashy, or did it warm your heart like a Metropolis Sharks scrimmage? Let me know in the comments below!
