Rewatching Smallville – Episode 16

Welcome back to Rewatching Smallville, my weekly dive into the iconic series that explores Clark Kent’s journey before becoming Superman. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the show, you’re invited to join in each Tuesday as I revisit episodes and share my thoughts and observations. Be sure to share your own memories and theories in the comments below!

Let’s dive into the 16th episode of Smallville‘s first season, “Stray.” This episode not only introduces us to a new character with a unique ability but also gives us a glimpse into the complex relationship between the Luthors.

Ryan James, a young boy with the ability to read minds, finds himself in Smallville after escaping his abusive stepparents. In a twist of fate (and a vehicular accident – count: 1, driver: Martha Kent), Ryan ends up staying with the Kents. Clark gets a taste of what it’s like to have a little brother, and Ryan discovers Clark’s otherworldly origins.

Meanwhile, Lex Luthor receives a surprise visit from his dear old dad, Lionel, who offers him a job back in Metropolis. Lex, being the independent thinker he is, doesn’t immediately jump at the opportunity.

“Stray” is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it introduces a character with abilities not related to meteor rocks, hinting at a wider universe of powers. Secondly, we learn about Lex’s deceased infant brother, Julian, which adds depth to the Luthor family drama. This revelation will play a crucial role in future seasons.

Moreover, the episode subtly parallels Clark and Lex’s journeys. While Clark gets a glimpse of what it’s like to have a sibling, Lex grapples with his father’s expectations and the weight of his family’s past. It’s a reminder that both characters, despite their different paths, share some common ground.

And as we’ve mentioned before on this blog… Is it just me, or does everyone in Smallville have an open invitation to the Luthor mansion? In this episode alone, Clark and Chloe casually drop by to chat with Lex. I guess when you’re the richest guy in town, you’ve got to expect a few unexpected visitors.

All in all, “Stray” is a solid episode that expands the Smallville universe and gives us a deeper understanding of our favorite characters. It’s a testament to the show’s ability to balance standalone stories with overarching plot development.

But enough from me – what did you think of “Stray”? Did you enjoy seeing Clark as a big brother? Were you surprised by the revelation about Julian Luthor? How many more people do you think will just show up at the Luthor mansion unannounced? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. I actually know for sure that I haven’t seen either Ryan episode. My parents told me they were too depressing, though that might be his second appearance more than the first. Someday I’ll have to do that rewatch of the entire series.
