Pinocchio
1940
Directed by Ben Sharpsteen and Hamilton Luske
Gather ’round, boys and girls, because today we’re diving into the magical world of Walt Disney’s 1940 animated classic, Pinocchio! This timeless tale of a puppet who dreams of becoming a real boy has captured the hearts of audiences for generations. So, let’s take a closer look at what makes this film such a masterpiece.
First off, let’s talk about the story. Based on Carlo Collodi’s 1883 novel, The Adventures of Pinocchio, the film follows the titular character, brought to life by the Blue Fairy, as he navigates a world full of temptations and learns valuable lessons about bravery, honesty, and selflessness. With the help of his trusty conscience, Jiminy Cricket (voiced by the inimitable Cliff Edwards), Pinocchio embarks on a journey that’s as thrilling as it is heartwarming.
The animation in Pinocchio is nothing short of breathtaking. The team at Walt Disney Productions, led by supervising directors Ben Sharpsteen and Hamilton Luske, pushed the boundaries of what was possible in the medium. From the intricate details of Geppetto’s workshop to the stunning underwater sequences, every frame is a work of art. And let’s not forget about the groundbreaking effects animation, which brought the film’s many memorable set pieces to life in ways that still impress today.
Of course, no discussion of Pinocchio would be complete without mentioning the incredible voice cast. In addition to Edwards’ unforgettable performance as Jiminy Cricket, we have Dickie Jones as Pinocchio, Christian Rub as Geppetto, and a host of other talented actors bringing these beloved characters to life. And who could forget the film’s villains? From the sly fox Honest John (Walter Catlett) to the terrifying Coachman (Charles Judels), these baddies are as memorable as they are menacing.
But perhaps the most enduring aspect of Pinocchio is its timeless message. At its core, this is a story about the importance of staying true to oneself and doing what’s right, even in the face of temptation. It’s a lesson that resonates just as strongly today as it did over 80 years ago, and it’s one of the many reasons why this film continues to be cherished by audiences of all ages.
So, there you have it, folks! Pinocchio may not have been an instant box office success upon its initial release, but time has proven it to be a true masterpiece of animation. With its stunning visuals, unforgettable characters, and heartfelt message, it’s no wonder that this film has earned its place in the pantheon of Disney classics.
But hey, don’t just take my word for it! I want to hear from you, dear readers. What are your favorite moments from Pinocchio? Which character stole your heart? And how many times did you wish upon a star after watching this enchanting tale? Let me know in the comments below!

What a coincidence! Today is also the day I started my 12 day Pinocchio review marathon. Out of all those movies, the original Disney animated film is the only masterpiece. I’ve loved it ever since I was a kid. Perfect animation, charming characters, and truly unlikable villains.
