Rewatching Smallville – Episode 1

Welcome, Superman fans, to an exciting new journey as we embark on Rewatching Smallville! I am diving back into the world of a young Clark Kent, his friends, and his enemies in the iconic TV series that ran for an impressive 10 seasons. Each Tuesday, I’ll share my thoughts, insights, and nostalgic musings on an episode, starting from the very beginning. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a newcomer to the series, I invite you to join me on this adventure. Dust off your DVD collection or fire up the Hulu and let’s watch together as the future Man of Steel navigates his way through high school, discovers his powers, and faces the challenges that shape him into the legendary hero we all know and love. Don’t forget to share your own memories, opinions, and theories in the comments section – let’s make this a fun, engaging experience for all Smallville enthusiasts!

The Pilot episode wastes no time hurling us into the action, starting with a literal bang as a meteor shower rains down on Smallville in 1989, forever altering the lives of its residents. Amidst the chaos, we meet a cherubic Lex Luthor (sans his trademark chrome dome) and catch a glimpse of Lana Lang’s tragic backstory. The Kents, meanwhile, stumble upon a naked toddler in a cornfield and decide to take him home, because apparently that’s what you do in Kansas.

Fast-forward 12 years, and we’re introduced to a teenage Clark, played by the chiseled Tom Welling, whose acting range spans from brooding to… more brooding. Clark pines for Lana (now with a meteor rock necklace that doubles as Kryptonite-lite), while juggling his budding friendship with a young, follically-challenged Lex Luthor and the incessant nosiness of Chloe Sullivan, Smallville High’s resident intrepid reporter.

The episode sets the stage for the “freak of the week” formula, as former geek Jeremy Creek goes on an electrifying revenge spree after a 12-year coma. Clark, naturally, saves the day, but not before enduring the indignity of being strung up as the “Scarecrow” in a field. Oh, and let’s not forget the shocking revelation that Clark is an alien with superhuman abilities, delivered with all the gravitas of a parental chat about the birds and the bees.

All in all, the Pilot does a solid job of establishing the show’s premise and introducing us to the key players. The episode also sets up the ongoing mystery of Clark’s origins and his destiny, as well as the Kents’ uncanny ability to crash a pick-up truck. Five minutes in and they’ve flipped that thing upside down. Don’t worry, we’ll keep track of pick-up truck wrecks over the seasons.

Lex Luthor, portrayed by the charismatic Michael Rosenbaum, steals every scene he’s in, even managing to make his numerous sports car crashes seem suave. That’s right, we’ll be keeping track of Lex’s accident record, too. And while Chloe’s inquisitive nature may grate on some (yours truly included), she serves as a useful foil for Clark’s secretive tendencies.

Now, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: Lana’s morbid choice of accessories. I mean, who in their right mind would wear a piece of the very meteor that orphaned them as a necklace? It’s like wearing a locket containing the ashes of your deceased goldfish. But hey, I guess everyone grieves differently. And don’t even get me started on the creep factor of Whitney Fordman, a high school senior, dating Lana, a freshman. I can’t be the only one who finds that unsettling, right? I know small towns have slim pickings, but come on, Whitney. Find someone your own age, preferably without a constant reminder of their tragic past dangling from their neck.

The Pilot laid the groundwork for Smallville‘s unique take on the Superman mythos, blending teen drama with comic book lore and setting the stage for a decade-long journey that would redefine the Man of Steel for a new generation.

So, fellow Smallville enthusiasts, what are your thoughts on the Pilot? Did it make you a believer from the start, or did it take a few more meteor freaks to win you over? Share your memories and opinions in the comments below, and join me next week as we dive deeper into the strange and wonderful world of Smallville!

  1. Oh man I loved Smallville, pilot hooked me from the jump. Reworking Superman’s mythology into a high school drama sounds so funny to say but it was freakishly addicting! Those first couple seasons had me glued to the TV. Maybe I’m overdue for a rewatch myself.

  2. I love Smallville! I really want to rewatch it all from the beginning too. It’s gonna feel weird now that I spent so much time on the Arrowverse, but they never managed to capture the charm of Smallville.

P.S. The pilot episode is a classic.
