Three – Bloganuary

Welcome to Bloganuary. It’s this thing that WordPress is doing to encourage bloggers to post something every day by providing a regular prompt. I think that “Bloguary” would not only sound better but makes more sense. Maybe they’re saving that for next month. But if they go with Blogebruary I’m dropping out. Anyway, today’s prompt asks the question: What colleges have you attended?

I spent five great years at Bluefield College (now Bluefield University) in Virginia and graduated with both a BS in Behavioral Science and a BA in Christian Studies. Bluefield felt like home during my time there and I made lifelong friends and memories. My professors really pushed me to grow intellectually and spiritually. I’m so thankful for the foundation Bluefield gave me.

After Bluefield, I attempted a few different graduate programs, trying to further my education. First, I tried an online Master’s program through Liberty University. Unfortunately, the online format just wasn’t a good fit for my learning style. Then I attempted an in-person Master’s at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. While this was better suited to my needs, life circumstances prevented me from completing the program. If I’m honest with myself, I was there for all the wrong reasons. Dad had passed away the year before and this was just my way of coping. Some people run off and join the circus, I ran off and debated theology.

Finally, I gave online learning one more shot through a Master’s degree and teacher licensure program at Regent University. Sadly, this too ended up being an unsatisfying experience. While it was disappointing to not complete these programs, I learned a lot about myself and my educational needs along the way.

The path to learning is rarely straightforward! I’m proud of myself for continuing to pursue growth and knowledge over the years, despite some setbacks. My journey has given me empathy for others who face challenges in higher education.

What about you – what has your educational journey been like? I’d love to hear your story! Leave a comment below sharing your own adventures, twists and turns. Wishing you all the best in lifelong learning!
