Chocolate

Because today is National Chocolate Chip Day, our Sunday Scribblings prompt for this week is Chocolate. If you decide to write a post based on this week’s prompt, be sure to go back here and share your link so everyone can see how you interpreted things! Here’s what I did with it…

I don’t like chocolate.

The end.

Okay… not really. I’ll get into this. Do you want me to get into this? Fine, I’ll get into it…

Once upon a time, I actually thought chocolate was all right. I’ve never really had the biggest sweet tooth, even as a kid. My Halloween candy usually sat in a bag at the back of my closet until it was time to pull the bag out and go trick-or-treating again the following year. But I did enjoy a good chocolatey dessert every now and again.

Growing up, there was this restaurant called Shoney’s that had several locations in my area. Not sure if it still exists or not, to be honest… But they had a hot fudge cake that I considered amazing when I was allowed to get dessert if we had dinner at Shoney’s. Then there was the chocolate pie at the K&W Cafeteria.

No… my family did not only frequent restaurants populated by the elderly.

But I was also known to enjoy the occasional chocolate pudding Snack Pack, brownie, chocolate chip cookie, or Little Debbie Swiss Cake Roll from time to time. Oh, and the occasional candy bar. I did, after all, lose two of my baby teeth on the same Twix bar. Pretty sure it was the left Twix. After I lost two teeth I decided not to eat the one on the right.

Then why would I open this post by saying I don’t like chocolate? Clearly I’ve eaten plenty of chocolate in my life.

But then there was that little period of time during my adolescence when I had an eating disorder. To help me put on some weight, my doctor “prescribed” daily chocolate milkshakes. And my dad delivered on that prescription. Didn’t even have to deal with a co-pay. He just pulled out a blender, threw in a couple scoops of ice cream, poured in some milk and Hershey’s chocolate syrup and hit one of the dozen or so buttons on that old blender that I’m certain all did the exact same thing. Sure, each button was labeled differently, but I’m pretty sure they all could have just said “on.”

Anyway… every day my father would deliver me a large chocolate milkshake in the evening after dinner. Sometimes he’d throw in an extra one in the afternoon before dinner. So. Many. Chocolate. Shakes.

So I got sick of chocolate. That’s the official story.

The end.

But here’s how I would make the story a little more exciting…

That bag of Halloween candy that sat in the back of my closet? It got tired of being ignored for a year. The fun size Kit-Kats and 3 Musketeers and Snickers and Milky Ways fused together to take the form of a small, bipedal walking monster made of chocolate. Several months after Halloween, let’s say April or May of the next year, I would hear a strange noise coming from my closet. At the age of nine there was no way I would have been brave enough to discover the source of that noise. But knowing now what I didn’t know then, perhaps I’d have simply closed my eyes and gone back to sleep.

In the middle of the night, I faced my fears. I opened that closet door and found what was apparently beating on the interior of the door. The tiny chocolate monster stood at roughly one and a half feet tall. As soon as it had an opening, it leapt forward and grabbed onto my lower left leg. This thing had no teeth, thankfully, so as it bit down on my shin, its mouth was nothing more than a minor annoyance.

But it latched on! It continued trying to gnaw on my leg with its toothless chocolate mouth! I struggled to kick the little monster off but it was relentless. I managed to get myself and the chocolate creature down to the kitchen where I finally bent down and grabbed the thing with both my hands. I tore it off my leg, leaving streaks of chocolate on my bare skin. I then shoved it into the garbage disposal, head first. I flipped on the switch and listened as the blades whirred to life, cutting apart that chocolate nightmare.

The end.

  2. Stumbled on your blog via the post on Crackerberries.
I used to love chocolate during my younger days. My father also made sure that I brushed my teeth after having a chocolate. Maybe because of that my teeth haven’t suffered as much as it would probably would have. Still love chocolates. But now I am very restrained.
