Theorizing that one could time travel within his own lifetime, Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the quantum leap accelerator and vanished. He awoke to find himself trapped in the past, facing mirror images that were not his own, and driven by an unknown force to change history for the better. His only guide on this journey is Al, an observer from his own time who appears in the form of a hologram that only Sam can see and hear. And so, Dr. Beckett finds himself leaping from life to life, striving to put right what once went wrong, and hoping each time that his next leap will be the leap home.

Southern Comfort

• Sam finds himself hovering over a birthday cake in the dark about to blow out the candles.
• Once he blows the candles out, the lights come on and he’s suddenly surrounded by a crowd of scantily clad women.
• I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that Sam has leapt into something of a dirty old man who acts as the patron in some sort of brothel?
• August 4, 1961
• One of the girls gives Sam a glass eye that once belonged to her grandfather, claiming it would bring luck to whoever owns it.
• A catfight nearly breaks out over the glass eye but is interrupted when the doorbell rings.
• The older lady in charge tells the girls it’s time to go to work, just as Al arrives.
• Once they head out to the lobby, they greet a bunch of guys, welcoming them to the best cathouse in New Orleans.
• Al informs Sam that he is Gilbert LaBonte, owner and operator of the LaBonte Sewing and Quilting Academy.
• Obviously the cover for what’s really going on behind closed doors.
• Apparently the house has been in operation since the Civil War days.
• Unfortunately, Al is unsure why Sam is there because Ziggy is still trying to run down the original history.
• It becomes clear that Al is just here to enjoy the show since he has no real information for why Sam is here.
• Sam tells him to go away until he has useful info.
• As soon as Al leaves, Sam is once again attacked by the woman who seems to be in charge, Marsha, who mentions setting a date and calls Sam a bridegroom.
• Do I hear wedding bells?
• They’re interrupted again, but this time one of the girls in the foyer is complaining that one of the sailors is hurting her as he tries to force her upstairs.
• Sam steps in, then the house’s cook steps in with a shotgun.
• That puts an end to any potential unpleasantness, but it also means several customers take off.
• The girl who was the potential assault victim says she’s not feeling well and goes to get some water just as another man enters the house.
• He says he’s looking for a redhead about 20-years-old… and they assume he’s looking for a type.
• Then he introduces himself as Jake Dorleac who runs a finishing school and he’s looking for one of his students who has run off.
• He’s trying to find this girl without her parents potentially finding her in a brothel.
• Sam quickly figures out that Gina, the girl who claimed to be feeling sick, was trying to get away from Jake when she saw him come in.
• He finds her in the kitchen and tries to confront her about why she’s there, but she avoids his questions and gets back out to the foyer.
• Al returns and tells Sam that Gina disappears tonight and her body is found a month later in a swamp, beaten to death.
• Gina heads upstairs and is confronted by Marsha, who turns out to be her cousin.
• She’s afraid that Gilbert will throw both of them out if he finds out that Gina isn’t really a working girl and tries to convince her to go back home, but Gina argues that she just can’t do that.
• Sam manages to get rid of a group of out-of-towners looking for a good time and Marsha asks what he’s up to.
• He asks her to go tell the girls that they’re shutting down the house for the night to celebrate his birthday.
• The truth is he doesn’t want to risk any strange men coming in and being the one who takes off with Gina in the middle of the night.
• Al worries that Gina could still sneak out on her own and Ziggy agrees that shutting down the house changes nothing.
• The girls all decide to enjoy their night off by hitting the French Quarter, but Gina and Marsha stay behind.
• Gina claims she’s still not feeling well and Marsha wants to keep Sam company.
• Marsha goes to “slip into something more comfortable” and Al reveals that she and Gilbert never get married, which will probably come as a shock to Marsha.
• Somewhere outside, Jake the finishing school headmaster is snooping around.
• Sam checks in on Gina and asks about her family, but she’s not very forthcoming with the personal information.
• He confronts her about what she’s running away from and points out that she doesn’t belong here.
• She asks if he wants her to leave, but he makes it clear that’s not what he means.
• Outside, Jake begins to climb the trellis…
• Back downstairs, Marsha “unwraps” her present to Sam, but he’s trying to turn down her advances.
• Upstairs, Jake is inside the house and confronts Gina.
• He’s clearly a violent man and warns her that she never should have left him.
• Downstairs, Marsha is upset that Sam doesn’t want her and accuses him of being in love with Gina.
• Sam denies having feelings for Gina, but Marsha still cries, explaining that she was hoping marriage to Gilbert was her ticket out of prostitution.
• He begins having a good heart-to-heart with Marsha, telling her it’s never too late to start over again…
• But he’s interrupted when they hear Gina screaming.
• Jake is beating her with some kind of strap… maybe a belt.
• Sam bursts into the room and tells him to try that on him.
• The two men fight and Gina accidentally falls and is knocked out, allowing Jake to get away.
• When Gina comes to, the sheriff is there to ask questions.
• She claims that she didn’t know her attacker.
• Then she says she’s not going to press charges.
• Sam convinces the sheriff to come with him to find Jake at the Adams Hotel.
• They confront him and Jake claims that Gina is his wife.
• The sheriff does some checking and Jake is telling the truth.
• They’ve been married for two years and since Gina isn’t pressing charges, there isn’t anything the sheriff can do.
• Sam tries to argue that if they let Jake go, he’ll kill Gina.
• But the sheriff makes the point that Jake is a pillar in his community and Gilbert is the owner of a whorehouse.
• Without Gina pressing charges, it’s one man’s word against the other…
• Back at the house, Al reveals that Gina is pregnant, which is why she’s been feeling sick all night.
• Sam asks her about the pregnancy and she tells them all about how Jake took care of her after her mother died.
• But once they were married, Jake changed…
• He began beating her regularly…
• Gina thinks that, maybe, he won’t beat her anymore if he knows she’s pregnant with his child.
• Al says that Gina still dies…
• The next day, they devise a plan to somehow “get” Jake.
• He comes by to pick up Gina and her things, but he’s interrupted a “class picture” for the Sewing and Quilting Academy.
• During some confusion, Sam snaps a photo of one of the scantily clad ladies kissing Jake.
• Just then, the sheriff enters the room and Sam says he’s just caught the headmaster of a finishing school on film soliciting a prostitute and implies it’s not the first time.
• The rest of the ladies in the room all speak up and claim he’s made offers to each of them.
• Jake claims that his school’s board would never believe this trash, but Sam says they might, given the widespread reputation of the LaBonte Sewing and Quilting Academy.
• Then he says it doesn’t matter, telling Sam that he’s still a pimp and these girls are still just prostitutes.
• And Gina comes down the stairs and tells Jake that he is still a wife beater and she doesn’t have to be afraid of him anymore.
• They force Jake to leave, threatening to run the photo in the Lake Charles Gazette.
• Al tells Sam that he got so paranoid about the photo that he never returned to Lake Charles and his temper got him into so much trouble, it landed him in a psychiatric hospital.
• Gina moves to Atlanta and takes a waitress job and names her son after Gilbert.
• Marsha surprised Sam by leaving with Gina to begin her own new life.
• After saying his good byes, Sam leaps…
• Into a face painted, wig wearing rock star playing with a rock band on stage in front of an enormous crowd.
• Oh boy.
