Theorizing that one could time travel within his own lifetime, Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the quantum leap accelerator and vanished. He awoke to find himself trapped in the past, facing mirror images that were not his own, and driven by an unknown force to change history for the better. His only guide on this journey is Al, an observer from his own time who appears in the form of a hologram that only Sam can see and hear. And so, Dr. Beckett finds himself leaping from life to life, striving to put right what once went wrong, and hoping each time that his next leap will be the leap home.
Piano Man
- Sam finds himself sitting behind a piano, just as a song has finished.
- This is the second time this has happened to him.
- At least, this time, he’s not on stage at Carnegie Hall.
- Convenient that he keeps leaping in at the end of the song.
- I feel like it would be embarrassing to swap bodies with someone mid-song.
- Sam appears to be the entertainment in a local bar somewhere.
- A woman who is obviously a fan sits beside him on the piano bench calls him Chuck and asks him to do the song he wrote, “Somewhere”.
- Fun fact: “Somewhere” is an original song that was written and performed by Scott Bakula.
- November 10, 1985
- How about that, it’s my sister’s third birthday.
- As Sam performs “Somewhere,” another woman enters the bar, watching him intently and is moved to tears by the song.
- What a cool job… to be the piano guy in a bar.
- The blonde crying woman approaches Sam and points out that he put lyrics to it, then says she thought she was the lyricist in the act.
- Sam takes a break to talk to this woman who is an obvious klutz.
- Lorraine has been looking for Chuck for months.
- Apparently the two of them were a duo and Chuck walked out on Lorraine without saying good-bye.
- She assumes it’s because he just didn’t want to marry her.
- Al arrives but can’t find anything on Chuck because he apparently changed his name.
- Lorraine reveals that she’s with someone named Carl who is successful and is ready to marry her.
- The reason she tracked Chuck down is because Carl wants to make sure there are no “ghosts” from her past.
- Sam and Al speculate about why he’s here… to put Chuck and Lorrain back together or break them up so Lorraine can have a life with Carl?
- Lorraine calls Carl on a payphone to let him know where she is and how things are going.
- Carl decides this was all a mistake and that she should come home now.
- Sam plays through another set while Lorraine watches on, waiting for them to talk some more when he’s done.
- She’s clearly still in love with Chuck.
- While reminiscing, Lorraine reveals Chuck’s original name, which finally helps Al dig up some info.
- The bartender asks Chuck to borrow his car to take the drunk request girl home.
- Al finds out that the real Chuck, aka Joey DeNardo, died in a car bomb outside a bar in Tularosa, New Mexico.
- Unfortunately, this means the bartender and that other lady were killed.
- And the killer who failed with the bomb manages to get a shot off and Sam takes a bullet.
- Lorraine gets Sam into her car and they take off down the road with the killer in hot pursuit.
- Sam’s wound is okay, since the bullet went through his leg… no serious damage.
- Al shows up in the car and reveals some of Joey and Lorrain’s history.
- They were a hot lounge act in Chicago up until Joey saw someone get murdered… a guy named Ponti.
- Apparently Joey, Ponti, and another guy named Nick were close growing up.
- Ponti and Nick got into the mob while Joey went into a music career.
- But seeing Ponti get killed by Nick put Joey in danger, so he left Lorraine and changed his name to try and get away.
- Lorraine’s car runs out of gas… and the bad guy is gaining fast…
- Somehow, Sam and Lorraine have enough time to push the car off the road and cover it in bushes, so the bad guy drives right by them.
- The next morning they manage to get some help and Sam calls the sheriff from a nearby diner.
- That diner just happens to have a piano… because of course it does.
- Lorraine asks Sam to teach her the song.
- They turn it into a duet and really impress the folks in the diner.
- When the diner owner suggests that they get an act together, Lorraine gets upset and walks out.
- Lorraine calls Carl again who insists that she get home now, saying that being around Joey is going to get her killed.
- Al suddenly shows up and tells Sam he’s got to get out of there because both he and Lorraine will be killed in about eight minutes.
- So Al shows up with a new version of history right after Lorraine tells Carl where they are?
- How much you wanna bet that Carl is actually Nick?
- They make their getaway and then a tire blows out… and of course the spare is flat, too.
- Sam manages to drive the car on the rim of the wheel into a service station where the mechanic will charge $80 to replace the tire in a beggars can’t be choosers deal.
- Lorraine calls Carl again, who wants them to meet him at a nearby airport that he’ll fly to so he can pick her up.
- Al tells Sam that he has to break her heart to save her life, so he finally tells her that he doesn’t want to be with her anymore.
- Lorraine gets in her car and drives away…
- But then they see the bad guy’s truck chasing right behind her.
- Al says that now history shows that she gets run off the road and is killed in the accident.
- Sam steals the mechanic’s truck and goes after them.
- He manages to catch up then overtake the killer, who then keeps tapping his bumper.
- When the bad guy pulls alongside Sam to shoot him, he’s not paying attention and has a head-on collision with an 18-wheeler.
- Al thinks it’s over, revealing that Joey lives and the truck driver is okay because he was wearing his seatbelt.
- But then he sees that Lorraine still dies.
- See? Carl is Nick.
- Lorraine meets Carl at the airport and tells him all about what’s been happening… revealing now that she knows the truth about why Joey left and that he witnessed Ponti’s murder at the hands of Nick.
- Logic dictates now that she must die… she knows too much.
- Al says that Lorraine’s body is found sometime later in the desert with a gunshot wound to the head.
- Back in the airport hangar, Carl is asking too many questions and he is clearly angry.
- Then Sam walks in with a rifle, revealing to Lorraine who Carl really is.
- Told ya…
- Nick taunts Lorraine to the point where she approaches to attack him, but he grabs her and threatens to break her neck unless Sam drops the rifle.
- In the scuffle, Lorraine accidentally drops an engine block on Nick’s head, killing him instantly.
- Later, Al reveals that Joey and Lorraine get their act back together and head to Hawaii to settle down.
- Then Sam leaps and is standing in a dark room that is being lit only by a bunch of candles on a birthday cake.
- Once he blows out the candles, he’s suddenly surrounded by about a dozen women in various stages of undress wishing him a happy birthday.
- Oh boy.
